  • Falmouth's Murry commits to Hartford

    Falmouth senior Andrew Murry (joined by clockwise from his right, father Chris Murry Sr., athletic director Cooper Higgins, brother Chris Murry Jr., boys' soccer coach Dave Halligan and mother Lisa Murry) signs his National Letter of Intent Friday afternoon to attend and play soccer at the University of Hartford.

    Murry helped lead the Yachtsmen to the 2011 Class B state championship and was named The Forecaster's Falmouth Fall Male Athlete of the Year. He plans to study business at Hartford.

  • Mid-Coast Sports Roundup

    RSU5 coaching openings

    Freeport High School has coaching openings for varsity softball, varsity girls' tennis and junior varsity baseball. Durham Community School is seeking a middle school softball coach. FMI, 865-4706, ext. 228 or sickelsc@rsu5.org.

  • February's here, postseason nears

    The championship month of February has arrived. Over the next 29 days (it is a leap year, mind you), indoor track, swimming, skiing and wrestling will bestow their hardware, with basketball and hockey winnowing down to a select few teams.

    Before we get to that point, there's plenty of recent action to plow through.

    Here's a glimpse:

  • South Sports Roundup

    Scarborough player wins Gaziano Award

    Scarborough's Logan Mars was named the Gaziano Award winner as the top offensive linemen in the state. He received a trophy and a scholarship of $2,500. Mars was an all-conference selection as a junior and a senior. He was named the 2011 team MVP by the Quarterback Club.

  • Febuary's here, postseason nears

  • Local bowler part of first place HS team

    Scarborough's Tyler Lerman (back row, third from left) is part of the Southern Maine Blizzard, a high school bowling team, which plays at Yankee Lanes. The team won its first five matches, placed second at a Christmas tournament and is currently first in the Southern Division. The state individual championships will be held Feb. 11 in Bangor. The team championships are March 3 at Yankee Lanes.

  • Yarmouth's Knaub bound for Bryant

    With former teammates and future stars looking on, Yarmouth senior Chris Knaub signs his National Letter of Intent Friday afternoon to attend and play soccer Bryant University.

    Knaub, one of the state's premier goalkeepers and Yarmouth's Forecaster Fall 2011 Male Athlete of the Year, was also joined by his mother, Judy (to his left), Clippers varsity assistant coach Dale Wing (seated to his right) and head coach Mike Hagerty (standing, far left).

  • Eisenhart chosen for Deering baseball job

    PORTLAND—There were many reasons why the Deering baseball job appealed to Tim Eisenhart, but the most profound, simply put, was that it gave him an opportunity to come home.

    Eisenhart, a 1989 DHS graduate, has been nominated to succeed Mark Sutton as the coach of the storied Rams program. His hiring will become official after receiving school board approval.

    "I had an amazing baseball experience at Deering under (former coach) Mort Soule," Eisenhart said. "It's great to be a part of such a strong tradition of coaches. I really just want to carry on the tradition."

  • North Sports Roundup

    Greely volleyball to be honored

    The Class A state champion Greely volleyball team will be honored by MaxPreps and the National Guard for being one of the top six nationally ranked programs in the country in a ceremony Friday at 9:30 a.m., at the Greely gymnasium.

  • Greely hockey teams hold food drive

    The Greely boys' and girls' hockey teams recently held a food drive to benefit the Cumberland Food Pantry. Donations and gate fees were donated to the food pantry.
