  • Yarmouth ski dominance highlights exciting week

In a week that saw the basketball regular season come to an end, the girls' hockey playoffs heat up and indoor track hold its conference championship meet (please see stories), there were also a series of key boys' hockey games, some postseason swimming action for North Yarmouth Academy and Yarmouth, and the continuation of the Yarmouth ski dynasty.

The Falmouth boys' basketball team is no longer perfect, but the Yachtsmen are ready for what they hope is a run for a first-ever Class B state championship.

Falmouth, which dropped to the No. 2 seed after Friday's season-ending 48-45 home loss to Cape Elizabeth, will meet No. 7 York in Saturday's quarterfinal round.

  • Greely girls eye Gold Ball; Falmouth hosts prelim

The girls' basketball tournament began Wednesday night when the eighth-ranked Falmouth Yachtsmen hosted No. 9 Cape Elizabeth in a preliminary round contest. The winner meets undefeated, top-ranked and defending regional champion York in the quarterfinals.

Greely got a bye into the quarters, by virtue of its solid 16-2 mark. The Rangers, seeded third, will meet No. 6 Mountain Valley once again in their first playoff test.

Freeport (5-13), North Yarmouth (6-11) and Yarmouth (5-13) fell short of the postseason.

    Three a lucky number?

  • Falmouth boys win WMC track title; Greely impresses as well

Local runners, jumpers and throwers once again shined the brightest at Friday's Western Maine Conference indoor track and field championship meet at the University of Southern Maine in Gorham.

The Falmouth boys took first place with 176 points, easily outdistancing runner-up York (104). Greely, led by dazzling performance from senior Mark McCauley, was third with 66. NYA (39) came in seventh, Yarmouth (22) was 10th and Freeport (11) placed 12th.

  • Falmouth 7th graders win tournament

The Falmouth 7th grade girls' basketball team recently won the 2009-10 Freeport League title with a record of 11-1 and also captured the 2010 Central Maine Travel League title after going 3-0.

If it's February, that means it's time for the Deering girls' basketball team to make a run at another Class A state championship. The Rams, along with Cheverus and McAuley, are primed to make some noise at the upcoming tournament, which begins Monday. Waynflete will be a very tough out in Western C.

    Deering won't be denied

  • Skiing, wrestling postseasons begin for Portland-area teams; boys' hockey finishing up

Deering played host to the Western A wrestling regionals Saturday, local skiers have begun their postseasons, Portland's swim team took part in its Southwesterns meet and boys' hockey teams are looking to make the playoffs in our latest installment of where things stand.

  • Deering boys runner-up at SMAA track championships

The indoor track postseason began Saturday at the Portland Expo with the 79th SMAA championship meet and will culminate Monday at the state championships.

The fun began early Saturday morning with the boys' SMAA competition. When it ended, Deering had 107.33 points, good for second behind Scarborough (139.67). Cheverus, thanks largely to its distance and throwing dominance, placed third with 82 points. Portland, behind the brilliant effort of junior Imadhi Zagon, had 46 points and came in sixth.
