    Top local swimmers, track and field athletes and wrestlers measured themselves against the best in the region at recent New England meets.

    The indoor track and field championships were held last weekend in Boston and to no one's surprise, one local runner stole the show.

    Brunswick rec offering youth volleyball

    The Brunswick Recreation Department and the Mid-Coast Junior Volleyball Club are conducting a four-week co-ed youth league in Brunswick on Monday and Wednesday afternoons, from mid- March until April school vacation. FMI, brunswickme.org/parkrec/programs/Spring/youthvolleyballspring.pdf.

  • South Sports Roundup

    Scarborough resident to play in all-star classic

    Scarborough's Carolyn Freeman, a one-time McAuley standout, now at St. Joseph's College, will take part in the 2010 New England Women's Basketball Association Senior All-Star Classic on March 27. Freeman averaged 10.0 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game this winter. Freeman is the 19th player in school history to break the 1,000-point barrier.

  • Locals do well at New Englands

    Athletes from Cape Elizabeth, Scarborough and South Portland took part in the recent swimming and diving and track and field New England championships.

    Indoor track and field held its meet in Boston Friday night.

    The top male finisher was Scarborough senior Ross Thomas, who was 11th in the high jump (6 feet-3 inches). Senior teammate John Gonzales placed 24th in the 55 (6.85 seconds). South Portland's 4x200 meter relay team, featuring junior Adrian Reid, senior Jamison Esquibel, sophomore Daniel Medici and senior Joe Michaud, was 13th (1 minute, 35.32 seconds).

  • Hoops season was nothing but net

    Another tremendous basketball season is in the books.

    The 2009-10 campaign had no shortage of drama, passion and excitement. When all was said and done, teams local teams were right in the middle of things, stealing headlines from start to finish.

    The Scarborough girls made the biggest splash, going undefeated in stirring fashion to win a first-ever Gold Ball. South Portland and Cape Elizabeth also took part in the postseason.

  • Smith done at McAuley

    PORTLAND—Catherine McAuley High School girls' varsity basketball coach Wil Smith has stepped down after four seasons.

    Smith, who was involved with the Lions program for nearly a decade, felt the timing was right and stressed the desire to spend more time with family.

    "It was just time," he said. "I've been there nine years. It was time to think about where the program was and is, my and my family's future. The program's in a good place. Ready to compete for a championship. It's best for all parties for me to resign at this time."

  • Freeport ski team wins Spirit award

    The Freeport Middle School Alpine and Nordic ski teams recently won the Team Spirit Award. The Greg Waite Cup winner is determined by a ballot vote from all competing teams and honors the team with spirit, sportsmanship and camraderie for all.
