  • Out & About: Carrie Underwood steers into Portland

One of the biggest stars in country music is motoring toward the Cumberland County Civic Center, and it’s a concert I don’t intend to miss. Multiple-platinum-selling and multi-award-winning singer Carrie Underwood stops her national tour for one performance on Monday, March 15.

The next evening the St. Lawrence String Quartet plays Hannaford Hall on the University of Southern Maine’s Portland campus. This fabulous classical foursome celebrates 20 years together on this tour.

  • Out & About: Ed Asner, playing FDR, kicks off Portland Ovations series

Portland Ovations has a slew of interesting programs planned over the next few weeks, and the next two on the calendar belong to theater sub-genres.

First up is a theatrical recreation of key moments from the presidency of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who was elected during the Great Depression and died in office during the final stages of World War II.

Television actor Ed Asner, a seven-time Emmy Award winner, will portray Roosevelt this Friday in “FDR,” a one-man adaptation of the Tony Award-winning play, “Sunrise at Campobello.”

  • Out & About: Uncommon and unconventional music

Uncommon and unconventional are the twin themes of three of this weekend’s musical happenings in southern Maine.

Top billing goes to a string quartet with an unconventional approach to classical music. Brooklyn Rider is a moniker that evokes modern music; this New York-based foursome definitely crosses over into that realm. Portland Ovations is the presenter and Merrill Auditorium is the venue.

  • The Great Outdoors: Exploring Robinson Woods in Cape Elizabeth

Spend an hour walking through majestic white pine and oak on the ledge-dotted heights of 80-acre Robinson Woods, then scoot across the road to lie in the sun and peer far out to sea over Pond Cove. Robinson Woods is part of an impressive network of green spaces and walking trails under the stewardship of the Cape Elizabeth Land Trust.

  • The Art Forecast: Maine artists win New England Art Awards

The New England Journal of Aesthetic Research is a facetious, hi-falutin’ name for the best online art Web site in New England and possibly the United States.

It’s the personal blog of Boston Phoenix art critic Greg Cook. In his never-ending quest to promote regional art and artists, Cook organized the Boston Art Awards in 2008 and, for 2009, changed the name to the New England Art Awards.

  • Eating Well: Good neighbors, good winter soups

If awards were given for the best neighborhoods in Maine, surely the Deering Center neighborhood in Portland would be honored for its congeniality.

People happily care for each others’ children, return errant pets to their owners, help with snow removal, tend community gardens, host neighborhood parties and, often, offer samples of their home cooking.
