A chronological compilation of obituaries from all four editions of The Forecaster, covering 14 Maine cities and towns: Portland, Falmouth, Cumberland, Yarmouth, Freeport, North Yarmouth, Chebeague Island, South Portland, Cape Elizabeth, Scarborough, Bath, Brunswick, Harpswell and Topsham.

  • Rev. Richard C. McCarthy, Jr., 75: Former Portland priest

    PORTLAND — Rev. Richard C. McCarthy, Jr., 75, died Aug. 14 at Saint Joseph's Manor, where he resided for the past several years.   

    He was born in Portland, a son of Richard C. and Virginia Lappin McCarthy, and attended St. Joseph's School and graduated from Cheverus High School in 1952.  

    From 1954 to 1956 he served stateside in the U.S. Army before attending  St. Mary's Seminary and University in Baltimore, Md. He later studied at Glastonbury Monastery in Hingham, Mass., and at Maryknoll Seminary in Glen Ellyn, Ill.

  • Karen B. Clarke, 85

    YARMOUTH — Karen Brown Clarke, 85, died Aug. 6 from complications of Alzheimer’s disease.

    In 1925 she was born in her grandparents’ house in Portland, a daughter of Mary Fletcher Brown and Simmons Brown.

    She graduated from the Waynflete School in Portland and Smith College.

    An early environmentalist, she was a founder and chair of the Simsbury, Conn. Conservation Commission.

    While living in Connecticut, she also sang in the chorus of the Simsbury Light Opera Company.

  • Ansel N. Tupper, 81: Avid sailor, devoted to family

    SOUTH PORTLAND — Ansel Norton "Tup" Tupper, 81, deeply loved by his family and respected by his friends, died Aug. 9.

    He was born in Concord, N.H., on Aug. 26, 1928, to Dorothy Wing Daggett and Harold Fisk Tupper of South Berwick, a situation that led him to playfully claim dual citizenship in Maine and New Hampshire.

    After he graduated from Dover High School in 1946, he attended the University of New Hampshire, where he participated in football and track until he graduated in 1950.

  • Irving D. Fisher, 92: Respected scholar, USM professor

    BRUNSWICK — Irving D. Fisher died July 22 at the age of 92.   

    On March 16, 1918, he was born in Hartford, Conn., the son of Clara and Nathan Fisher, and attended local schools.

    After he graduated from the University of Connecticut in 1940, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served with distinction in Europe from 1943 to 1946.

    He returned to the United States, and was honorably discharged as a captain, but continued to serve in the Air Force Reserve for 27 years, retiring as a lieutenant colonel.

  • Arthur J. Johansen, 79

    BATH — Arthur John Johansen, 79, died peacefully at home Aug. 11 with his family by his side.  

    On Dec. 10, 1930, he was born in Bath, the son of Charles and Lillian Smith Johansen.

    After he graduated from Morse High School in 1949, he joined the U. S. Navy, and served for four years.

    On June 6, 1964, he married the love of his life, Barbara Harrison.  

    He worked for the Bath Daily Times and was instrumental in the merger of the Bath Daily Times and the Brunswick Record, forming the Times Record. 

  • January G. Strauss, 70

    BRUNSWICK — January G. Strauss, 70, formerly of Baltimore,  died at her home Aug. 11.

    On Jan. 10, 1940, she was born in Washington, D.C., the daughter of Monroe and Doris Risher Gregory. 

    She graduated from Dunbar High School, Washington, D.C., in 1957 and received her bachelor's degree from Kalamazoo College, in Michigan. 

    In 1984 she married Daniel Strauss in New York City.

  • Judith A. Ryder, 71: Enjoyed traveling, time with family

    PORTLAND —  Judith Ann "Judy" Kane Ryder, 71, died Aug. 11 at the Barron Center in Portland, where she resided for the past two years.

    On April 18, 1939, she was born in Portland, the daughter of Sgt. John G. and Pearl Theriault Kane of Munjoy Hill, and attended Cathedral schools in Portland.

    An independent, strong and determined woman, she lived life on her own terms.

    She loved family gatherings in Pownal and visiting the old neighborhoods on Munjoy Hill.

  • Katherine P. Westberry, 73: Proprietor of elderly boarding home

    PORTLAND — Katherine Priscilla (Serunian) Westberry, 73, formerly of South Portland, died Aug. 4 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough.

    Born in Portland on July 4, 1937,  a daughter of Ovagin John and Rose Nancy Aloian Serunian, she attended local schools and was a 1957 graduate of South Portland High School.

    She lived in South Portland most of her life, where she also owned and operated Serunian Manor, a boarding home for elderly patients  on Highland Avenue, for many years.

  • William J. May, Sr., 89: Served in South Pole, avid ham radio operator

    HARPSWELL — William J. May, Sr., 89, died peacefully in his sleep at his Harpswell home Aug. 7, surrounded by his five beloved children.

    On July 24, 1921, he was born in Philadelphia, Penn., the youngest child of Edgar and Florence May.  

    After he graduated from high school in 1939, he worked in Philadelphia before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1942.  

    While serving in the Navy during World War II, he was one of the earliest Navy scuba divers and served on several Navy battleships.  

  • Ruth C. Faulstich, 107

    BRUNSWICK — Ruth Clarke Faulstich, 107, died Aug. 8 at her home at Sunnybrook Village.  

    On July 13, 1903, she was born in Springfield, Mass., a daughter of Clara Brown and John Darling Clarke.

    She graduated from Central High School and Bay Path Business School.  

    On Feb. 19, 1927, she married Frederick H. Faulstich, in a double-ring ceremony with her sister, Cressa Clarke, and Ralph Beaudry.
