  • Josephine M. Bernier, 95

    ORLANDO, Fla. — Josephine M. Bernier, 95, a former Brunswick resident, died Jan. 17 at Savannah Courts in Oviedo, Fla.

    She was born in Topsham on Oct. 7, 1915, and was the daughter of Thomas and Leah Fournier Powers.

    She attended Brunswick schools and in 1946 married Adrian Bernier, who passed away on Valentine's Day in 2004 after 58 years of marriage. She was a homemaker and devoted wife and mother. Her family was the most important part of her life. She enjoyed cooking, baking, crocheting and was well-known for her clam chowder and salmon pies.

  • Witby Prescott Tousignant, 7 months

    PORTLAND — Witby Prescott Tousignant, 7 months, died quietly in the arms of his parents, Peter M. Tousignant and Rebeccah C. Schaffner-Sousignant on Jan. 28. He was born on June 25, 2011.

    Tousignant was born with a severe congenital heart defect called hypoplastic left heart syndrome and died from complications of the disease.

  • James "Brother" Ross, 83: A lifelong fisherman with a hearty laugh

    PORTLAND — James "Brother" Ross, 83, died at Mercy Hospital on Feb. 1 after a lengthy battle with esophageal cancer.

    He was born on June 9, 1928, on Chebeague Island, one of four children of Etta and James W. Ross St. He became known as "Brother" very early in his life by his older siblings and the name stuck with him. He was educated in Chebeague Schools and later in Butler School in Portland after his family moved there during war time.

  • Joseph James Doucette, 82: An insurance man and his children's biggest fan

    SCARBOROUGH — Joseph James Doucette, 82, died Jan. 30 after a brief battle with cancer.

    He was a devoted father, husband, golf enthusiast and a retired actuarial executive from Allstate Insurance Company. He was was blessed to have his seven children and loving wife by his side when he passed.

    Doucette was born Dec. 5, 1929, in Allston, Mass., to Helen and Joseph Doucette, who raised he and his three siblings to be devout Catholics.

  • Clinton Ray, 65

    BRUNSWICK — Clinton Ray, 65, died Jan. 28 at Bodwell House with his family by his side after a year-long battle with kidney cancer.

    He was born in Majestic, Ky. on Oct. 20, 1946 and was a son of Virginia Tennessee and John Nelson Ray Sr. He was educated in the Majestic school system. At age 19 he was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War with the fourth infantry division and served from 1967 to 1968. Upon his return from Vietnam he joined the U.S. Navy and was stationed at the Brunswick Naval Air Station with Fleet Air Wing 3 in 1969.

  • Rita Nell Hudson, 71

    BATH — Rita Nell Hudson, 71, died Jan. 25 with her family by her side after a long illness.

    Born on July 11, 1940 in Panama City, Fla., she was the daughter of Bueford L. Hoskins and V. Burnell Rutherford Gainer.

    On May 8, 1965 she married John E. Hudson and together they raised three daughters. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.

    She is predeceased by her parents and brothers Bobby and James Hoskins.

  • Michael D. Reid, 53

    BATH — Michael D. Reid, 53, died Jan. 28 at Maine Medical Center in Portland after a sudden illness.

    He was born in Princeton, W. Va. on Nov. 16, 1958 and was the son of Darryl and Imogene Reid.

    He attended Gray-New Gloucester High School and served in the U.S. Army as a Unit Supply Specialist.

    On Feb. 18, 1990 he married Diane Spear. He began working at Bath Iron Works in 1989 and continued to work there until his death.

    He enjoyed fishing, hunting, boating and the company of his friends, family and colleagues.

  • Shirley Mae Parshley Swearingen, 90: Loved raspberries and John Wayne

    BATH — Shirley Mae Parshley Swearingen, 90, died at Mid Coast Hospital on Jan. 21.

    She was born in Bath on Dec. 20, 1921 in the family quarters of the Shepard St. Fire House to George and Ethel Varner Parshley; her father was the driver of Engine 3, a horse-drawn steam pumper.

    She attended elementary and middle schools in Bath and graduated from Morse High School in 1940. She later worked for many years as a bookkeeper at Rogers Hardware, Bath Iron Works and Canal National Bank.

  • Irma Caldwell Russell, 94

    BRUNSWICK — Irma Caldwell Russell, 94, died on Jan. 23 at Mid Coast Hospital.

    She was born Nov. 16, 1917 in Starks and was the youngest of four children born to Roy and Idea Caldwell. She attended schools in Starks and Madison.
