Jane S. Callaghan, 85: Active member of Tuttle Road United Methodist Church
Mar 16, 2010 12:00 pmCUMBERLAND — Jane S. Callaghan, 85, died peacefully at her daughter's home March 12.
On Dec. 27, 1924, she was born Lucy Jane Smith in Wilkinson County, Ga.
During World War II, she met and married Hugh Nichols Callaghan of Philadelphia while he was serving in the U.S. Army in Georgia.
After the war, she worked for the Bell Telephone Company in Philadelphia, and later as a food service worker for the public schools in Willow Grove, Penn., where she raised two children and was active in the Willow Grove United Methodist Church.
Thomas M. Wood, 83
Mar 16, 2010 10:10 amYARMOUTH — Thomas M. “Tom” Wood, 83, died March 11 surrounded by his family after a brief illness.
He was born on Oct. 9, 1926, on Long Island, the son of Lida and Thomas F. Wood and attended the island school before graduating from Portland High School in 1944.
Following his graduation, he entered the Army Air Forces, serving in Germany.
Hiram Dexter, Jr., 92
Mar 16, 2010 10:10 amFALMOUTH — Hiram Dexter, Jr., 92, died peacefully surrounded by family, on March 12.
The son of Hiram and Ola (Cole) Dexter, he was born in Brookline, Mass., Sept. 27, 1917.
As a child he spent his summers in Maine in a house built by John Cole, his maternal grandfather. He eventually moved to Maine with his family.
He was never happier than when he was at sea, first on his lobster boats – all named the “Jenny D.” – and then on his cruising boats, all named the “Teazer.”
Martin F. "Mert" Concannon, 88: 20-year volunteer at St. Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen
Mar 15, 2010 10:00 amPORTLAND — Martin F. "Mert" Concannon, 88, died peacefully March 7 at Sedgewood Commons with his loving family by his side.
He was born in Portland on July 6, 1921, a son of Michael and Annie (Curran) Quincannon.
After graduating from Cheverus High School in 1939, he attended Western Reserve University.
During World War II he served in the U.S. Army and Air Force from 1941 to 1945.
On Aug. 25, 1956, he married Margaret Joyce Concannon.
Barbara Campbell Jannelle, 79; Loved crazy hats, antique auctions
Mar 10, 2010 1:30 pmSCARBOROUGH — Barbara Campbell Jannelle, 79, died at the Pine Point Nursing Center March 4 with family at her side after a long illness.
Born in Boston on March 18, 1930, she was a daughter of Stanley S. and Alma Curran Campbell.
In 1953 she married Neal Alan Janelle, Sr., and had four children together, Karyn, Alan, Brenda and Brian.
She and her husband enjoyed spending time at their camp at Sebago Lake, RV camping, going to antique auctions and flea markets.
She was known for her fun-loving nature and love of crazy hats.
Allen V. Smith, 78
Mar 10, 2010 1:30 pmSCARBOROUGH — Allen V. Smith, 78, died at home surrounded by his family March 6 after a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis.
After attending South Portland schools, he served in the U.S. Navy and the Naval Reserves from 1951–1959.
On April 17, 1954, he married Edna Wilbur and together had two children, Sally and Allen.
After he worked at Portland Gas Light for many years until March 1989, he worked at Avis Car Rental in South Portland for 16 years.
Royal D. Farmer, 75: Maine school bus driver of the year
Mar 10, 2010 10:00 amBRUNSWICK — Royal Delesednier Farmer, 75, died March 2 at Mid Coast Hospital, surrounded by his family.
Born May 25, 1934 in Lubec, he was the youngest of 12 children of Aubrey and Lovina Farmer.
In 1952 he graduated from Lubec High School.
On Nov. 12, 1953, he married Mary Irene Campbell.
Shortly after moving to Brunswick he began his 43-year career as a bus driver for the Town of Brunswick, until he retired in 2002.
Judith A. (Sym) Koenig, 70

Marshall R. Turner, 82
Mar 09, 2010 11:20 amCUMBERLAND — Marshall Reed Turner, 82, died at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House March 1 surrounded by his family.
He was born in Yarmouth on Feb. 11, 1928, son of Charles Frederick and Harriet Smith Turner, and attended local schools, graduating from North Yarmouth Academy.
On June 25, 1950, he married Glenna Lee Burnell.
As an Air National Guardsman, his unit was sent to Libya where he served as a radio technician during the Korean War.
Annette B. Hertz, 86: Avid reader, enjoyed playing piano
Mar 09, 2010 11:10 amYARMOUTH — Annette B. Hertz, 86, died March 5 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.
Born in Chicago on July 15, 1923, she was the daughter of Mack and Lillian Adler Orenstein.
On Aug. 12, 1945, she married Leroy J. Bieringer in Chicago. They moved to Hartsdale, N.Y. in 1957 where they raised their family.
In 1968 she received her degree in occupational therapy from Columbia University and became the first occupational therapist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York City.
