Boys' basketball is coming off its third trip to the state final in four years and despite some big-time graduation losses, will be in the hunt again. The girls' squad continued its resurgence my making doing something last winter it hadn't done this century. The Capers will again be in the playoff hunt. Boys' hockey should be one of the best in Western B. The girls are hoping to make a run to the postseason. Track, swimming and skiing boast plenty of standout athletes as well.

Dec 13, 2011 12:00 amScarborough's winter athletic teams will be in the hunt for greatness pretty much across the board. The boys' basketball team looks to join the top contenders in Western A. The girls' squad welcomes a new coach and hopes to get back to its championship form from two seasons ago. Both hockey teams have plenty to get excited about and will be heard from all season. The boys' track team is defending a championship, something the girls have done for years. Expect the excellence to continue. Both swim teams feature plenty of talent. The nascent ski program will turn heads as well.

The boys' basketball squad has been a regular contender and this winter, should be one of the best in Western A. The girls hope to keep their long streak of playoff appearances intact. Boys' hockey will once again play hard from start to finish. Both the track and swim programs are in good shape, with excellent athletes covering the events.

Dec 12, 2011 11:20 amDeering's winter athletic teams will make noise in the weeks to come. The boys' basketball team is viewed by many as not only a top contender, but perhaps the team to beat in Western Class A this winter. The girls have come oh-so-close to championships the past two years and once again will be making a run at glory. There's no hockey this winter as there weren't enough boys to field a team and the Maine Principals' Association shot down a request to have Deering players compete with Portland High, even though a girls' player (Lindsey Sneider) from the school is doing that very thing.

Dec 12, 2011 12:00 amAfter a pair of championships in the fall, Cheverus eagerly awaits the winter sports season. The boys' basketball team was just moments shy of an undefeated state title in 2010-11. This year's squad hopes its recent run of even year championships continues. The Stags will be in the mix throughout. The girls' team has been very competitive in recent seasons and could be on the verge of doing something special. Boys' hockey got back to playoffs a year ago and could be one of the top contenders in Western A. The girls' team again will be a factor well into February.

After winning its first Gold Ball in seven years, the basketball team is absolutely loaded this season and with a new coach will settle for nothing short of a repeat crown. Indoor track again has some promising athletes to watch and with a new coach, swimming should be on the short list of Class B favorites once again.

Girls' basketball hopes for a run to the playoffs. Boys' hockey is viewed as a potential Western A darkhorse. The girls' team will be very tough to contend with from start to finish. Both track teams will hold their own in the league. The girls' squad has a new coach. There's also a new face at the helm of the swim program, one well known to the school. That group, boys and girls, will give their all this winter.
Waynflete Flyers Winter Sports Preview
Dec 12, 2011 12:00 amAll four Waynflete winter sports teams have legitimate chances to do something special. Boys' basketball turned heads in Augusta last year and will compete in Western C. The girls' team has been knocking on the door for several seasons and this could be the year the Flyers kick it down behind one of the state's premier players. Swimming made its mark as a first-year program in 2010-11 and now has its eye on a championship. Nordic skiing is always competitive and this winter should be no exception. There are also five girls playing hockey with the Cape Elizabeth team.

There are few track programs in the state that can match numbers and talent with Falmouth. The boys are seeking another crown, while the girls will be one of the league's best.

The girls' squad could field its best team in ages and will likely be a feel-good story. Track has some good athletes waiting to turn heads, while both ski teams expect to excel again on both the Alpine and Nordic sides.
