The Seacoast United U-17 boys’ soccer team, featuring several local players, won the recent National Cup at the Premier level in Aurora, Colorado. Seacoast United tied a team from Illinois and beat squads from New York and Washington state before edging Connecticut, 3-2, in the championship game.
“What a job the boys did all season,” said Martyn Keen, who along with Paul Cameron, served as coach. “It was a magical ride. The chemistry came through. The boys grew together. They played for each other all year.”
The team included Deering’s Jonata Mbongo, Falmouth’s Nick Buckley, Greyson Cohen and Mike Lydick, Portland’s Alex Frank and Yarmouth’s Henry Coolidge and Matt Dostie, along with Bangor’s Garth Berenyl, Bangor Christian’s Tyler Welch, Gorham’s Ryan Firmin, Jackson Fotter and Tyler Richman, Maranacook’s Sam Wilkinson, Thornton Academy’s Noah Niles and Chase Pierce, Waterville’s Peter Mayhorn, Windham’s Robert Inniss and Winslow’s Jake Lapierre.
