AUGUSTA — Thirteen schools from four districts in the greater Portland area have received awards under the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s HealthierUS School Challenge for encouraging wholesome nutrition and frequent physical activity.

The schools include Mable I. Wilson and North Yarmouth Memorial in Maine School Administrative District 51; Benjamin Wentworth Intermediate, Blue Point Primary, Eight Corners Primary and Pleasant Hill Primary in Scarborough; Dora L. Small, Frank I. Brown, Helena Dyer, James Otis Kaler and Waldo T. Skillin elementary schools in South Portland, and William H. Rowe and Yarmouth Elementary in Yarmouth.

Each award winning school will receive plaques, banners and $500 to deposit into their food-service accounts. They are certified as HealthierUS Schools for a four-year period, until July 2015.
