Caroline Santaguida, an eighth-grader from Brunswick, has been chosen as the December STAR Student of the Month at Maine Connections Academy, a virtual public charter school based in South Portland.
Santaguida, 13, represents the Skating Club of Boston and is coached by former Olympians and world champions. She is the 2019 Northeast Regional Pewter Medalist, and a 2019 Eastern Sectional competitor in intermediate ladies. Santaguida’s goal is to be on Team USA next year.
For two years, Santaguida has been a student at MCA, where this year she’s taking algebra, language arts, science, social studies, art and physical education. She said she’s especially fond of social studies “because I love learning about Europe and foreign countries and traditions.”
Maine Connections Academy is Maine’s first statewide, tuition-free, distance-learning charter school for students in grades 7-12, now in its fifth year of operation.
Winners of the Diocese of Portland’s Christmas Card Art Contest were treated to an Italian dinner, framed display of their artwork, a book and rosary bracelets blessed by Bishop Robert P. Deeley at a holiday event held Dec. 19.
Local winners of the contest included Lainey Trieu of St. Brigid School in Portland for grades 3-5 and Dorcas Bolese of Holy Cross School in South Portland for grades 6-8. Students from Greenville and Auburn were also chosen.
All Catholic school and religious education students throughout the diocese were invited to participate, and over 125 submissions were received for the contest, each featuring original creations by the artists reflecting a passage from scripture. The winners’ creations appeared on Christmas cards sent to 2018 Catholic Appeal donors.
“These pictures capture the beauty of our faith,” said Deeley in a prepared release. “The students did a magnificent job, and I’m very, very grateful for that.”
