Falmouth students hold inaugural drone race for charity

On Dec. 7, the Aeronautics Club at Falmouth High School hosted its first drone race. The student pilots used first-person goggles to fly their drones through an indoor race course in a competition for prizes. All proceeds went to Honor Flight Maine, a nonprofit that provides no-cost trips for veterans who want to view national war memorials in Washington, D.C.

Adaptive playground awarded grant funding

Children’s Odyssey was awarded a Let’s Play community construction grant that will be used to build a playground at the school’s new location at 19 Libby St., Portland.

The playground build is made possible by Let’s Play, an initiative by KDP that provides the funding, equipment and play spaces.

“We serve an area that is bursting with diversity and are very fortunate to be supported in our mission by the city of Portland and the community we serve,” said Emily Sawyer, the Children’s Odyssey’s preschool teacher who discovered KDP’s playground initiative. “We are grateful for KABOOM! and Let’s Play’s role in helping us turn our dreams of an adaptive playground into a reality.”

The target date for construction is March 23-24, according to Director Susan B. Hougaz-McCormick.

“Over the years the number of children who are non-ambulatory and rely on the use of wheelchairs, crutches, or adaptive walkers has grown,” said Laura Glover, one of Children’s Odyssey’s directors.

“A new playground affords us the opportunity to custom design a fun, safe, and engaging space for children of all capabilities to enjoy, learn, and grow.”

Gift to NYA will help students in need

North Yarmouth Academy earlier this month received a gift of $100,000 from an anonymous donor to support need-based student financial aid.

The gift will support both current-use financial aid ($25,000) and the North Yarmouth Academy Endowed Fund for Scholarship Assistance ($75,000), which provides need-based aid to deserving students.

“This gift ensures that some of the most talented students, no matter their economic circumstances, will have the opportunity to benefit from an NYA education, which is designed to inspire and challenge students in a supportive environment that promotes character development,” said Head of School Ben Jackson. “We are deeply grateful for this generous gift and the many ways it will enrich our entire community now and in perpetuity.”

Morse HS earns place on AP Honor Roll

Regional School Unit 1, home to Morse High School, is one of 373 school districts in the U.S. and Canada being honored by the College Board with placement on the ninth annual AP District Honor Roll. To be included, Morse High School had to, since 2016, increase the number of students participating in AP while also increasing or maintaining the percentage of students earning AP Exam scores of 3 or higher.

“We are thrilled to make the AP District Honor Roll that recognizes significant gains in student access and success,” RSU 1 Superintendent Patrick Manuel said.

Morse High School is one of only three schools in Maine to receive the honor.

Kassidy Plummer, who is captain of the Deering High cheerleading squad, is one of only three athletes chosen nationwide to participate in a major New Year’s Day parade in London.
