PORTLAND — School Board member Pious Ali announced he will seek the at-large City Council seat now held by Councilor Jon Hinck.

Ali is in the final year of his first term as an at-large School Board member. In 2013, he became the first African-born American and Muslim to win public office in the city.

Hinck, who was elected to the council in 2013, has announced his candidacy in state Senate District 27, where Democratic Sen. Justin Alfond is prohibited from running for a fifth consecutive term by state term limits laws.

Hinck and state Reps. Ben Chipman and Diane Russell and physician Charles Radis are seeking Alfond’s seat as Democrats, along with Green Independent Seth Baker. The primary elections for state and county seats is June 14. Nomination papers for the Nov. 8  city elections will be available in late June.
