FALMOUTH — The Maine State Ballet will award a tuition scholarship for a tap dance student in honor of long-time tap instructor Peggy Etter. The studio will also recognize Etter’s more than 50 years of service with an open house celebration and scholarship benefit on Saturday, July 18.

The afternoon will include an alumni reunion social, followed by dancing with Jonathan Miele and a tap performance in the Maine State Ballet Theater.

Etter began teaching tap in 1955 at the Dorothy Mason School of the Dance, which eventually became Maine State Ballet. Shortly after her retirement in 2005, her leg was amputated after complications from minor surgery caused severe blood clots.

But her enthusiasm never flagged and the school will honor her with the Peggy Etter Tap Scholarship, which will be awarded annually to a student.

Saturday’s reception will be held from 1-5 p.m. at the Maine State Ballet on Route 1. For more information or to RSVP, call 781-7672 or e-mail Pauline Concannon at pconcan1@maine.rr.com.
