Scarborough senior Rachael Wallace (joined by Red Storm coach Kerry Mariello) signs her National Letter of Intent Wednesday afternoon to attend and play field hockey at Stonehill College in Easton, Mass. Wallace, who signed just hours before playing for the Red Storm in the West Region ice hockey final (and who also plays lacrosse), said she looked at a handful of schools, but that Stonehill stood out.

“I’ve wanted to play in college and field hockey is the sport I’ve been most passionate about,” said Wallace, who is considering going pre-health or pre-med. “I wanted to play Division II and Stonehill was the one I wanted the most. They had a really good season last year. If I work hard in the summer, hopefully I’ll get minutes.”

Mariello, whose program has now sent 10 players on to compete at the next level, said that she expects Wallace, a three-year varsity standout, who played both defense and midfield in high school, to make a name for herself at Stonehill, much as she did with the Red Storm.

“It looks great for the program and it’s great for ‘Wally’ to play at the next level, which she’s desired to do,” said Mariello. “You just always recognize those athletes that have the intensity and passion. She developed a love for the sport at an early age. The greatness about her is her versatility. She’ll make a positive impact, hopefully immediately.”

Wallace, an all-state selection last fall, who posted a 40-0-2 regular season mark in high school, said that she hopes to win two more state titles (ice hockey and lacrosse) before graduating and added that her time with the Scarborough field hockey program was invaluable.

“Playing here has shaped me into the player I am,” Wallace said. “I can’t imagine playing anywhere else. We had great success. That helped my game.”
