SCARBOROUGH — Superintendent of Schools David Doyle has resigned as of Friday, Oct. 22, citing personal reasons.

He will continue as a consultant to the School Department and be paid his regular salary and benefits through the end of December.

“It was personal and time. I think the administration will move forward and continue to a great job. They are a very capable group,” Doyle said.

Doyle originally announced his retirement at the end of the last school year, and said he would stay through the end of the current school year.

School Board members declined to reveal the reason for Doyle’s early departure. They voted unanimously after a closed-door session Oct. 7 to accept his immediate resignation.

Assistant Superintendent Jo Anne Sizemore is expected to step into the superintendent’s role temporarily until the hiring process for a replacement can be completed.

The School Department held a party at the high school cafeteria Oct. 19 to thank Doyle for his 24 years of service. Approximately 100 school staff, School Board members and teachers attended, according to School Board member John Cole.

Cole said the department would likely hire the New England School Development Council to do a national search for a new school chief. He expected this service to cost between $10,000 and $15,000 and to take approximately three or four months.

“By the time we’ve done the interview process, it should be the end of March,” he said.

Cole said he is looking forward to the process and that he hoped to see a large number of diverse candidates.

“We haven’t had some free-thinkers in that school administration for a long time,” he said.
