SCARBOROUGH — Voters on Tuesday approved a $38.8 million fiscal year 2014 education budget by a 1,490 to 1,332 vote.
The budget was $54,000 less than one rejected by voters May 14, and 1,349 voters still said the budget was too high. In the nonbinding question, 938 voters said the budget was too low while 496 found it acceptable.
Passage of the school budget, along with the municipal budget and town share of Cumberland County operations will likely boost local property tax rates to $14.88 per $1,000 of assessed value from the current $13.80 rate.
The 2,822 votes cast represented a nearly 20 percent turnout, the largest ever for a school budget referendum, according to Town Clerk Tody Justice.
