SCARBOROUGH — The School Board on Nov. 20 unanimously elected board member Donna Beeley as chairwoman, replacing former Chairwoman Christine Massengill.

Board member Kelly Murphy was elected vice chairwoman, also by a 7-0 vote.

Beeley, a former Scarborough teacher and administrator for nearly 40 years, was elected for a three-year board term in 2012. Murphy, a stay-at-home mother who once worked for the Massachusetts Teachers Association, joined the board in 2011 and won re-election earlier this month.

Beeley quickly named board members Chris Caizzo, Jane Leng and Massengill to the board’s Finance Committee, with Caizzo as chairman. The appointments were made immediately, so that the committee is able to meet with town councilors in a tentative Dec. 2 budget discussion.

In addition, Beeley named herself as a non-voting alternate to the Finance Committee.

“We’ve had alternates before,” she said. “I think it’s a good idea to have an additional voice.”

Appointments to other committees will be made at the next board meeting on Thursday, Dec. 4, she said.
