Nick Neugebauer certainly saved his best for last.

Widely recognized as a solid, but unspectacular player, Neugebauer’s deference to his more prolific scoring teammates and his leadership helped Scarborough overcome a tough regular season and make a run to the Class A Final, but once there, Neugebauer put the Red Storm on his shoulders, scored three critical goals and helped his team win an improbable state championship.

Neugebauer has long worked hard at the sport and it all paid off on the biggest stage convincing The Forecaster to name Nick Neugebauer Scarborough’s Spring 2010 Male Athlete of the Year.

Neugebauer grew up in Scarborough and started playing lacrosse in the eighth grade. He played football (safety) and lacrosse in high school. The spring was his third on the varsity squad and he consistently made his presence felt from his midfield position after playing short-stick defensive middle his first two years.

While his stat line wasn’t overwhelming (15 goals, eight assists, 48 ground balls), his impact was unquantifiable.

Neugebauer had two assists in an early, come-from-behind overtime home win over Cheverus and scored twice in the regular season finale, a 16-12 loss at Portland, which heralded the Red Storm’s return to top contender status.

In a semifinal round upset win at South Portland, Neugebauer scored twice to help Scarborough triumph, 10-4.

Then came the state game.

Facing undefeated Portland, the defending Class A champion, Neugebauer scored off a steal early in the second period to put the Red Storm up, 3-1, went top shelf for a goal later in the quarter to make it 5-1, then made it 7-5 with 7:30 to play with his third goal of the day Scarborough went on for an 8-6 victory. If his three goals weren’t enough, his nine ground balls tied for a game high.

Neugebauer plans to attend Castleton State College in Vermont next year, his top choice, where he will play football and lacrosse and study health science.

His star figures to only continue to rise at the next level. Nick Neugebauer, Scarborough’s Spring 2010 Male Athlete of the Year, was able to pen the type of final chapter that athletes only dream of.

Coach Joe Hezlep’s comment: “Nick didn’t score in big numbers or be the number one guy on the other teams’ scouting report, but he brought so many things that do not show up in the stats. At the end of last season, Nick took it upon himself to become the best lacrosse player he could be and he most certainly did that. It would be hard to find a single player in the history of Scarborough lacrosse that has got more out of his talents than he has. He is the ultimate team player, works hard, does not get down on his teammates and is the first to show up and the last to leave. He was the kind of captain that ever successful team needs. He set an example of what it means that play like a champion.”

Spring 2010 Female Athlete of the Year

HEATHER CARRIER, Senior—Softball

Heather Carrier was one of the most prolific winners you’ll ever see.

She was also one of the finest teammates and leaders.

Carrier won four state championships in her high school career, including a pair of undefeated crowns earlier this school year.

On the diamond, she sparkled brightest, not only with her potent bat, but also by guiding Scarborough’s unrivaled pitching staff to dominance game after game. If that wasn’t enough, her demeanor earned her admirers far and wide.

In light of those attributes, The Forecaster is naming Heather Carrier Scarborough’s Spring 2010 Female Athlete of the Year.

Carrier grew up in Scarborough and started softball in Little League. She came to the varsity program as a first baseman and moved behind the plate as a sophomore. The Red Storm won the Class A title at the end of her junior season, beginning a mind-boggling run of personal dominance that was followed by first-ever championships in field hockey and basketball. At one point, Carrier personally won 59 games in succession.

This spring, as Scarborough again ran roughshod on Western A, Carrier was one of the toughest outs in the state.

Carrier’s final stats were dazzling as she hit .519, had an on-base-percentage of .581, had 28 hits, 26 runs scored, four doubles, a triple, six home runs and 25 RBI. If that wasn’t enough, she was almost flawless behind the plate and welcomed the responsibility of calling her own pitches. Over the last three years in that role, the six pitchers she’s worked with had a combined 0.74 ERA and 528 strikeouts in 312 innings. This year alone, Red Storm hurlers threw multiple no-hitters

Highlights included two hits, including a double, in a win over Westbrook in the opener, a two-run homer versus Windham, two longballs against Noble, three hits, two doubles, four runs scored and two RBI versus Gorham, two hits and two RBI against Massabesic, two hits and two RBI at Thornton Academy, three hits, including a double and home run, along with four RBI, in a rout of Biddeford, two hits against Kennebunk and three hits and two runs scored in an SMAA semifinal round playoff victory versus Kennebunk.

Carrier is also a Natural Helper, a member of Key Club and National Honor Society. She plays for the Southern Maine Flame ASA team and works at Dairy Queen. In the fall, she’ll attend Curry College, who she plans to study nursing and of course, play softball.

Her time in a Red Storm uniform won’t soon be forgotten. Heather Carrier, Scarborough’s Spring 2010 Female Athlete of the Year, has been a winner in every sense of the word.

Coach Tom Griffin’s comment: “Heather has been a major part of our success the past four years. She’s a tremendous leader, hard worker, dedicated and respectful. She comes to practice every day with a smile on her face. I can’t say enough great things about her. She seems to have everything in great perspective. She’s a loving daughter, great student and teammate and friend to everyone who has the pleasure to be part of her life. She’s the ultimate competitor, but also respects the game, umpires and opponents at all times. We’ll miss her next year. She made a huge impact on Scarborough athletics.”
