FALL 2010 MALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR:

MIKE CYR, Senior-Football

* Fitzpatrick Trophy semifinalist

* SMAA All-Star, York County Offense, first team tight end

It would have been understandable if Mike Cyr and his senior teammates gave up on football prior to this season. After all, the Scarborough varsity program won just six games in his first three years of high school, including just one in 2009.

But instead of looking for something else, Cyr stayed put and was repaid handsomely as the Red Storm enjoyed their finest Class A season ever.

For being a dynamic player on both sides of the ball, a great team leader and for sticking with a difficult situation, Mike Cyr gets The Forecaster’s nod as Scarborough’s Fall 2010 Male Athlete of the Year.

Cyr grew up in Scarborough and started playing football in the fourth grade around the time the Red Storm were winning a Class B state championship. They moved up to Class A a year later and wouldn’t post another winning record until this fall.

Cyr soon became a two-way standout and was at his best in 2010, catching 17 passes for 338 yards and eight touchdowns, rushing 18 times for 99 yards and on defense, registering 73 tackles (seven for a loss of yardage), a sack and an interception, while forcing two fumbles (recovering one)

The Red Storm matched their 2009 win total with a come-from-behind victory at Massabesic to start the year as Cyr had seven tackles and forced a fumble. He caught a TD pass the next week, Scarborough’s lone loss of the regular season, to Thornton Academy. Cyr caught two TD passes against Gorham and had three catches for 87 yards and two scores in a regular season-ending win over Kennebunk.

The Red Storm earned the No. 5 seed for the playoffs and dominated Biddeford in the quarterfinals, 48-14, as Cyr caught a 20-yard TD pass and had seven tackles. The fun ended with a 21-14 semifinal round loss at eventual state champion Cheverus, but Cyr caught two passes for 56 yards and a TD and made nine tackles as Scarborough’s dream season came to an end.

“We know we put Scarborough football back on the map,” Cyr said. “We knew we had talent and we had so much faith in (new) coach (Lance) Johnson.

Cyr was named a first-team league all-star and is a semifinalist for the Fitzpatrick Trophy.

Cyr is a standout wrestler in the winter (he reached the Class A consolation finals of the 189-pound weight class a year ago) and will return to the lacrosse field this spring after missing his junior season. He hopes to play football in college and is looking at several New England schools. He’s interested in studying biology.

He can certainly be proud of what he accomplished this season. Mike Cyr, Scarborough’s Fall 2010 Male Athlete of the Year, helped resurrect a program with a final chapter that was inspirational indeed.

Coach Lance Johnson’s Comment: “Mike Cyr is one of the toughest competitors and finest leaders I have ever been around. A extremely humble person who really cares more about team success than his own personal success. A player who enjoys every second he is playing or practicing with his teammates.”

FALL 2010 FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR:

CORTNEY HUGHES, Senior -Soccer

* SMAA All-Star, first team

* Western A regional all-star

* Senior All-Star

* All-State

The invincible and simply perfect Red Storm of Scarborough had many star players in 2010. One who did a little bit of everything, senior Cortney Hughes, helped fill the opponent’s net, keep the ball out of hers and proved selfless and dynamic all over the field.

When all was said and done, Scarborough won the Class A state title for the first time, didn’t allow a single goal in the normal run of play and best of all, vanquished several years of playoff heartbreak.

In light of her offensive and defensive skills and willingness to do whatever it took to win, The Forecaster is selecting Cortney Hughes as Scarborough’s Fall 2010 Female Athlete of the Year.

Hughes grew up in Scarborough and like so many girls in town began playing at a very young age. She made the varsity team as a freshman and while the Red Storm were consistently among the best teams in the region, they lost in their first playoff game each season.

This year, everything finally came together and Hughes, a center-midfielder, led the way, more often than not setting up other scorers, but occasionally getting into the act as well.

She had two assists in a win over Portland, scored in a close win at Cheverus, set up Meghan Tyson for an overtime game-winner versus Windham and headed home the winning goal in a regular season-ending victory at Thornton Academy, last year’s regional champion.

Hughes, who was also a huge factor on the defensive side of the field, didn’t score in the regional playoffs as Scarborough delivered some payback for prior playoff losses with a quarterfinal round win over Cape Elizabeth, a close victory over Cheverus (which scored on a penalty kick for the only goal allowed all season by the Red Storm) in the semifinals, and Thornton Academy in the regional final. In the state game versus Bangor, however, Hughes scored on a rebound in the first half to give Scarborough a 2-0 lead and the Red Storm went on to a 3-0 victory to cap its sensational season.

“Everyone was on the same page wanting to win,” said Hughes. “After all the playoff disappointments, we all wanted to win senior year. We played together since middle school and talked about winning states. We worked hard and pushed each other. Our defense was unbelievably strong.”

Hughes earned plenty of postseason accolades and is now playing premier soccer with the Seacoast United program. She’ll play tennis in the spring.

Hughes has committed to Merrimack College, where she’ll play soccer. She wants to eventually go to dental school.

The “Perfect Storm” will live on school lore, but will never be duplicated. The first Class A state championship team in school history had many standouts and Cortney Hughes, Scarborough’s Fall 2010 Female Athlete of the Year, was something truly special.

Coach Mike Farley’s Comment: “I believe Cortney was the engine that made our team run through the midfield and when she was on, we were really on, like in the state game. She’s an extremely gifted two-way player. He defensive ability was underrated because she’s such an exceptional passer. She constantly put teammates in position to succeed. Her defensive toughness was a big reason we didn’t give up a goal all regular season and made such a strong playoff run.”
