ALFRED — A Scarborough man faces up to 10 years in prison after his conviction Wednesday on a Class B theft charge in York County Superior Court.
Ryan J. Byther, 36, was found guilty by a jury of stealing $50,000 from American Legion Post 56 of York in 2008, according to a press release from Maine Attorney General William J. Schneider.
Byther took the money as a retainer fee to become a fundraiser for the post and used the funds on other business pursuits, including a failed bar and nightclub in Portland’s Old Port.
Schneider said Byther convinced Legion officials he could manage a $2 million fundraising campaign although he had no fundraising experience and is not licensed as a fundraiser in Maine.
Byther is scheduled to be sentenced on May 29.
