SCARBOROUGH — The Scarborough Public Library, at 48 Gorham Road, will host The New Commons Project community conversation on the acclaimed HBO series “The Wire” at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19.

The depiction in “The Wire” of the African American experience in an urban environment, and the filmography and writing structure used to enhance the series’ narrative, will be examined by Brian Purnell, director of the Africana Studies Program at Bowdoin College, and Jason Mittell, professor and chairman of Film and Media Culture at Middlebury College in Vermont. Purnell is also the Geoffrey Canada Associate Professor of Africana Studies and History at Bowdoin.

The New Commons Project is a public humanities initiative of the University of Maine Farmington in partnership with the Maine Humanities Council, said the release.
