SCARBOROUGH — The Scarborough Public Library is poised to become the first library in Maine to offer virtual lending of electronic books. The new 3M Cloud Library Collection will be launched at 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 19.

Celeste Shinay, manager of library programming and development, said the collection is offered at fewer than 75 libraries nationwide.

It differs from the statewide Download Library because electronic offerings for cardholders will be selected by library staff “in direct response to the interests of its readers,” Shinay said.

Cardholders will be able to download material from a network server, called a “cloud,” and the items can be downloaded almost instantly to any compatible devices owned by the borrower.

The library has five e-readers to loan and cardholders can win an e-reader by entering a drawing at the library between Oct. 19 and 21. The winner will be notified Oct. 22.
