SCARBOROUGH — More than 120 acres of farmland along Pleasant Hill Road near Spurwink Road will be preserved if the Scarborough Land Trust can raise $2.5 million by Dec. 31.

The nonprofit trust announced Jan. 22 it had reached an agreement to purchase the 126-acre Benjamin Farm, and will soon apply for a grant from the town land bond fund. The trust will also seek funding from other public and private sources.

The land was operated as a cattle farm for more than 50 years by Jerred Benjamin, who died in 2006. It is now owned by his children.

The trust envisions a network of trails and “agricultural possibilities” on the land, which borders a portion of the Rachel Carson Wildlife Preserve.
