Just one of three local boys’ hockey teams survived the quarterfinal round of the playoffs Tuesday night.

That would be Scarborough, ranked second in Western Class A.

The Red Storm, which finished the regular season 12-5-1 after closing with a 4-3 loss at Falmouth, despite a hat trick from Sam Dedian, hosted No. 7 Portland/Deering Tuesday night and held on for a 4-2 victory.

Scarborough got goals from Cam Brochu, Matt Caron, Jake Gross and Ian Morris to advance to meet sixth-ranked Thornton Academy (8-10-1 after beating Biddeford in its quarterfinal) in the semifinals Saturday at 2 p.m., at the Colisee in Lewiston.

The Red Storm beat the Golden Trojans twice in the regular season: 8-4 in Saco Dec. 11 and 7-2 at home Feb. 17. The teams last met in the playoffs in the 2011 quarterfinals (a 6-0 win for Thornton Academy). Scarborough beat the Golden Trojans in the 2006 quarterfinals (6-4) and in the 2008 preliminary round (6-3).

The Western A Final is Tuesday evening in Lewiston. The Scarborough-Thornton Academy winner will face either top-ranked defending champion Falmouth or upstart No. 5 seed Noble/Wells.

Off the ice, Scarborough’s Cam Loiselle was named one of eight semifinalists for the Travis Roy Award, given annually to the top player and sportsman in Class A hockey. The list will be whittled down to four — two each from Eastern and Western Class A — and the award will be presented at the annual Maine Class A hockey coaches’ banquet following the season. The award is named for Travis Roy, the former Yarmouth resident and North Yarmouth Academy player who was paralyzed from injuries sustained 11 seconds into his first shift at Boston University in 1995.

Elsewhere in Western A, South Portland wound up eighth at 11-7 after closing with a 3-2 win at Windham (behind goals from Dylan Farrell-Reny,  Kyle Halvorsen and Andrew Whipple) and a 2-1 home victory over Marshwood/Traip (as Halvorsen and Chris Mitchell scored).

The Red Riots opened the playoffs with a home preliminary round contest versus No. 9 Lake Region/Fryeburg/Oxford Hills Saturday and prevailed, 5-3, to win a postseason contest for the first time in four years. Mitchell had two goals, while Halvorsen, Whipple and Christian Guignard also tickled the twine.

Severely undermanned South Portland then went to No. 1 Falmouth Tuesday for the quarterfinals and while the Red Riots played hard throughout and got 51 saves from goalie Shannon Tully, their season ended at 12-8 with a 10-0 loss. South Portland was outshot, 61-4.

In Western B, Cape Elizabeth finished its up-and-down regular season at 7-10-1 after a 4-3 win at Maranacook/Winthrop (Jack Drinan, Ben Ekedahl, Curtis Guimond and Gabe McGinn all scored) and earned the No. 6 seed in the region.

Tuesday, the Capers went to two-time defending champion Greely, ranked third, hoping to spring an upset, but it wasn’t to be.

Cape Elizabeth fell behind 2-0 early, got a goal from Jack Tierney on a two-man power play to pull within one, but the Rangers scored with 15.1 seconds left in the first period, then got a power play tally less than two minutes into the second period and the Capers couldn’t recover. Ben Shea did add a second period goal, but Greely got one more in the third and ended Cape Elizabeth’s season at 7-11-1 with a 5-2 decision.

“Until there was 30 seconds left, we believed we were in the game,” Capers coach Matt Buotte said. “That’s the character of our kids. We could have given up after starting (the season) 0-5-1, but to the guys’ credit, they finished the year strong.”

Look for more success from this group in 2014-15.

“A lot of guys got good experience this year,” Buotte said. “We’re a young team. It’s very exciting. As the younger guys grow and have success, the guys leaving this year have a lot to do with that. They were great teammates and mentors. They’ve taken the freshmen under their wing. It’s been great. They’ll be missed.”
