SCARBOROUGH — A high school senior was killed and three other teenagers were injured when their car was struck by a tractor-trailer truck at the intersection of Payne Road and Holmes Road Saturday evening.

Police said Stephen Delano, 18, and Kevin Grondin, who graduated from Scarborough High School in January, were headed to the Gorham High School prom with their dates, both of whom are students at Gorham High School, when their vehicle was struck by an empty fuel tanker at around 5:25 p.m. on May 8.

Delano was transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where he was later pronounced dead. Grondin remains at the hospital in critical condition. One of the girls, whose names have not been released, was treated for a broken collarbone and a sprained ankle, the other was released from the hospital after treatment for minor injuries.

The fuel tanker was owned by J.P. Noonan Transportation. Police have not released the driver’s name.

The tanker was traveling east on Payne Road and the students’ vehicle was traveling up Scarborough Downs Road toward the intersection at Payne Road. Scarborough police said one of the vehicles ran a red light.

“We don’t know who was going through the red light,” Detective Sgt. Rick Rouse said. “We may never know.”

Maine State Police are reconstructing the crash.

Grief counselors have been made available to meet with Scarborough High School students this week.

Delano would have graduated with the 291 members of his class on June 13 at the Cumberland County Civic Center.
