Scarborough’s girls’ indoor track team, coming off a runner-up showing at the Southern Maine Activities Association championship meet, once again saved its best for last and won the Class A title for the sixth year in a row Monday at the University of Southern Maine in Gorham.

The Red Storm tallied 63 points and needed every single one of them to edge Bonny Eagle (62). Thornton Academy, the SMAA champion, was third with 58 points. South Portland did not score.

In the boys’ meet, won easily by Brunswick with 106 points, defending state champion Scarborough finished third behind the Dragons and Cheverus with 45.5 points. South Portland (13.5) managed a 14th-place finish.

At the Class B meet at Bates College in Lewiston, Cape Elizabeth’s girls came in fourth with 36 points. York beat Waterville by a point to take the title, while perennial champion Greely settled for third.

In the boys’ competition, won by Falmouth with 71 points, Cape Elizabeth tied Mt. Desert Island and North Yarmouth Academy for 10th place with 18 points.

Super six

Scarborough’s depth carried the day Monday as the Red Storm won just one event. Kelsey Schild, Melissa DellaTorre, Emily Tolman and Abby Chick captured the 3,200 relay in 10 minutes, 6.13 seconds.

Emelia Scheemaker was runner-up in the triple jump (34 feet-10 inches) and finished third in the long jump (16-3.5). Andrea Tolman was third in the pole vault (8-6). Jenny Snyder was third in the 55 hurdles (8.84 seconds) and fourth in the 55 (7.55). Nicole Kirk finished third in the 55 (7.55) and fifth in the 200 (27.05). Emily Tolman placed fourth in the 800 (2:30.77) and fourth in the long jump (16-2.75). Chick was sixth in the 800 (2:31.99).

Scarborough placed fourth in the 800 relay (1:51.70).

In the boys’ meet, the Red Storm, who were coming off an SMAA title, were led by their runner-up 800 (1:36.12) and 3,200 (8:22.18) relay teams.

Individually, a pair of athletes came in second. John Gonzalez was runner-up in the 55 (6.72) and Ross Thomas placed second in the high jump (6-4).

Eben Bradley was fourth in the pole vault (11-6). Joe Viola finished fifth in the 400 (53.80). Andrew Myers was fifth in the shot put (46-0). Nate Hathaway placed seventh in the mile (4:40.89). Alec James finished seventh in the pole vault (11-0). Luke Bogdanovich placed seventh in the shot put (45-6). Orrin James tied for seventh in the high jump (5-10).

For South Portland, Michael Foley tied for fifth in the high jump (5-10). Jamison Esquibel placed fifth in the 55 hurdles (8.3). Adrian Reid was seventh in the 55 (6.87). Jonathan Clement came in seventh in the 800 (2:02.79). The Red Riots came in third in the 800 relay (1:36.32).

Distance dominance

At Class B, the Cape Elizabeth girls got a pair of wins from their distance standouts. Rachel Nichols took the mile (5:19.75). Kelsey Barton was tops in the two-mile (12:06.09). Nichols was also runner-up in the 800 (2:27.48). Hannah Doss finished third in the mile (5:36.30). Lauren Nicholson came in sixth in the pole vault (7-0).

On the boys’ side, Leandre Some won the triple jump (43-9.75). Jon Bass was second in the pole vault (12-0).
