Stop the press: the Scarborough girls’ track team came in second.

After dominating the sport for the past four years and winning its share indoors and in cross country as well, the Red Storm finally met their match Saturday at the Class A outdoor state championship meet in Saco.

Scarborough mustered 98 points, which would have won last year’s meet easily, but it wasn’t enough in 2009, as Edward Little became the new champions thanks to its 136-point performance. South Portland did not score.

On the boys’ side, Bonny Eagle won the title with 77 points. Scarborough was a solid third with 63. South Portland came in 13th with 15 points.

Cape Elizabeth ran, jump and threw at the Class B meet at Mt. Desert Island.

In the girls’ meet, won by Waterville with 119 points, the Capers placed sixth with 42 points.

The boys’ team managed 3.5 points and finished 24th. Falmouth won a first championship with 112 points.

Not quite enough

Scarborough’s girls didn’t win an individual event, but took two relays as Meghan Summerson, Molly O’Connor, Abby Chick and Whitney Chamberlain won the 3,200 in 9 minutes, 41.24 seconds and Rachelle Greene, Nicole Kirk, Chamberlain and Chick took the 1,600 in new record time of 4:00.90. The Red Storm were also third in the 400 relay (Jenny Snyder, Andrea Tolman, Kirk and Greene; 50:78).

Greene finished runner-up in the 100 (12.86) and also was second in the 200 (26.89). Chamberlain was second in the 800 (2:19.29). Christy Manning was runner-up in the discus (120-4) and the javelin (114-2) and placed fifth in the shot put (34-1.5). Chick was third in the 400 (59.24). Emelia Scheemaker placed third in the triple jump (34-6.75) and fourth in the long jump (16 feet, 8 inches). Haela Booth-Howe finished fourth in the javelin (110-5). Kirk was fourth in the 200 (27.11) and fifth in the 100 (13.15). Snyder finished sixth in the 100 hurdles (16.65).

“We performed well,” said longtime Red Storm coach Ron Kelly. “Overall, I’m very pleased. You can’t win ’em all. Edward Little was very good.  We had to have some help, which we didn’t get. We had a good day, but they did what they had to do. One person can’t outscore three.

“I thought we had the potential to break the state record in the 4×4 relay and break our old Class B record and we did it. We were fired up about that. We hope to get under four minutes and score this week at New Englands. Manning had a school record.

“Whitney will be our biggest loss. We’re also losing Rachelle Greene, who’s moving to Texas. But who knows what the 8th graders will bring? We’ll be back.”

On the boys’ side, Scarborough also had plenty of solid performances.

Brad Nakanishi was runner-up in the pole vault (14 feet). Sam Chick came in second in the triple jump (42-11.75) and was also runner-up in the 300 hurdles (40-63) and seventh in the 110 hurdles (16.14). Nate Hathaway finished second in the mile (4:26.34). Craig Robinson was third in the two-mile (9:39.65). Ross Thomas placed third in the high jump (5-10). Conor Sullivan finished in a three-way tie for fourth in the high jump (5-8). Brian Woodbury was fourth in the shot put (50-1). Eddie Manning had the seventh-best discus throw (128-8).

The Red Storm were third in the 1,600 relay (Sullivan, Nick Moris, Hathaway and Chick; 3:31.55) and fourth in the 3,200 relay (Tom Pogar, Morris, Robinson and Tom Hague; 8:24.83).

For South Portland, David Hardison placed third in the 300 hurdles (40.77) and sixth in the 110 hurdles (15.93). Tom Redstone placed fourth in the racewalk (8:20.63). Tony Haeuser finished fifth in the 110 hurdles (15.61).

Capers win two

In Class B, several Cape Elizabeth girls capped their season in style.

The Capers got a victory in the pole vault from Emma Hockmuth (9 feet), while their 3,200 relay team (Kelsey Barton, Emily Attwood, Marita Stressenger and Rachel Nichols) won their race in 9:45.29.

Stressenger was runner-up in the two-mile (11:18.57). Nichols was second in the mile (5:12.98). Attwood was fifth in the mile (5:21.60). Hockmuth finished in a three-way tie for sixth in the high jump (4-8). Cape Elizabeth also came in sixth in the 1,600 relay (Attwood, Skyler Dunfey, Lexi Bass and Stressenger; 4:31.22).

For the boys, Jon Bass tied for fourth in the pole vault (12-6).

New Englands

The New England championships will be held this upcoming Saturday in Burlington, Vt. The event marks the final competition of the 2008-09 school year.
