SCARBOROUGH—The Scarborough girls’ lacrosse team hosted South Portland Wednesday and dominated from start to finish in a 15-1 victory.

Four days after a stunning 8-7 home loss to Yarmouth, in which it couldn’t hold a 6-1 second half lead, Scarborough was hoping to bounce back and did so in style.

Sophomore Kaitlin Prince immediately set the tone for the Red Storm (3-1), scoring the first goal of the contest less than a minute and a half in. She struck again for her second goal just two minutes later, prompting a time out by Red Riots’ coach Bill Fenton.

Scarborough senior Jess Meader joined the scoring party just a couple minutes later and the rout was on. Prince, however, was not finished and added another goal and an assist before halftime.

“Our loss Saturday really fueled us,” Prince said. “Our team needed this (win) to bounce back and show teams that they won’t be able to run right over us.”

Sophomore Bailey Adams also made her presence felt early on, notching a goal and an assist in the half, helping Scarborough to take a 10-0 lead into the break.

South Portland was unable to find an answer for the Red Storm’s fine-tuned offense.

“(Scarborough) just had possession of the ball,” said Fenton. “We might have won one of the 18 draws. They’ve got a really intense team. They really cover well. My girls were a little shell-shocked.”

Prince scored a lone second half goal to finish with four goals and one assist and Adams added two more assists for a total of three in the game to go with her single goal.

Scarborough saw 11 different players hit the scoring column, including seven assists for the team.

Red Storm coach Marcia Wood echoed Prince’s sentiments, attributing her team’s stellar performance to adjustments they had hoped to make after Saturday’s tough loss.

“After that game Saturday, we started making new goals,” Wood said. “We talked about cleaning up the passes, not making turnovers and forcing the other team to make turnovers.”

Wood’s team clearly got the message, with five different players notching at least one assist, and forcing numerous South Portland turnovers.

Senior Lani Edwards broke the ice for the Red Riots with her single goal with less than five minutes remaining.

South Portland returns to action Friday at Noble. The Red Riots continue this road swing Tuesday at Westbrook.

“This was a good learning experience,” Fenton said. “My girls never quit. We hope to get back on track against Noble.”

Scarborough has a key test at Massabesic Tuesday.
