SCARBOROUGH — The Fire Department will receive a $225,000 federal grant to train area emergency medical technicians.
U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree, D-Maine, announced in a press release July 3 that Chief Michael Thurlow spearheaded the grant application process. The grant will train EMTs from a coalition of fire departments in southern Maine, including Cape Elizabeth, Cumberland, Falmouth, Gorham, Portland, South Portland and Westbrook.
“In an era of tight municipal budgets, I’m excited these towns will be able to make this investment without putting an additional burden on local taxpayers,” Pingree said.
Scarborough was one of four municipalities to receive the federal Assistance to Firefighters Grant. The others were Bradley Volunteer Fire Department, Madison Fire Department, and Caribou Fire and Ambulance.
The total grant funding was just under $900,000.
