SCARBOROUGH — Planning staff Wednesday backed the most recent of eight suggested intersection redesigns to control traffic along Payne Road southwest of Haigis Parkway.
The plan recommended at a special Town Council meeting would create a new, 550-foot spur of Payne Road that would intersect with Route 1 to the north of the existing intersection. The original section would remain open. In addition, the Route 1-Haigis Parkway intersection would be widened. Traffic consultant Bill Bray said he anticipates a 20 percent reduction in traffic along Payne Road with the changes.
On Wednesday, Oct. 21, councilors will hold a public hearing on the plan before voting. Time is critical, Town Manager Tom Hall said, because the town must respond to the Portland Area Comprehensive Transportation System by the end of October to ensure funding.
