The Southwestern Maine Activities Association and Western Maine Conference outdoor track and field championship meets were postponed two days by bad weather, but it was worth the wait when they were finally contested Monday.
Scarborough certainly felt that was as it won the boys’ SMAA title, outdistancing runner-up Cheverus, 130-81. South Portland had 32 points to come in seventh.
The Red Storm got wins from Ryan Jamison in the 200 (22.5 seconds), Robert Hall in the two-mile (10 minutes, 11.28 seconds) and its 400 (43.9), 1,600 (3:35.64) and 3,200 (8:21.61) relay teams. Jamison was also runner-up in the 100 (11.14). Colin Tardiff was second in the mile (4:40.65). Will Fowler placed second in the two-mile (10:12.85). Kevin Manning was runner-up in the pole vault (12 feet, 6 inches). Hugh McSorley finished second in the shot put (47-5).
“We went into the SMAA’s just hoping to come out of it healthy,” said Scarborough coach Derek Veilleux. “We were able to accomplish that and winning was an added bonus. This group knows how to win, and they took advantage of the opportunity that was presented to them. We got a big boost in the 110 hurdles, getting three to the final, and then going 3, 4, 5. Going into the meet we were seeded for just one point. We had strong relays like always, taking all three. In the 4 x 400, we finished second but a DQ, not the fault of the athletes, by Cheverus put us first. My kids showed a lot sportsmanship and class, as they gave the first place medals back to Cheverus as they felt they had earned them.
“Ryan Jamison had a huge day, finishing as the 100 runner-up, breaking the school record with a 11.01. He also led off the SMAA record breaking and school record breaking 4×100 relay. He finished his day with a win in the 200, bettering his personal best.”
South Portland saw Michael Cuesta finish runner-up in the triple jump (41-0.75) and Ben Michaud place third in the long jump (19-2). Joe Zelasko placed third in the shot put (45-0.5) and fourth in the discus (131-6).
In the girls’ meet, won easily by Bonny Eagle with 122 points, South Portland (33) placed eighth, while Scarborough (22) was 11th.
The Red Riots got a runner-up performance from their 3,200 relay. Shannon Conley (2:25.89) and Nyajock Pan (2:27.81) went 3-4 in the 800.
The Red Storm’s top finisher was Cailley Ledue, who was runner-up in the pole vault (8-6). Sarah Rinaldi placed third in the triple jump (32-2.5) and was fourth in the high jump (4-10).
At the WMC meet in Naples, the Cape Elizabeth boys were sixth and the girls seventh in Division I (Falmouth’s boys and Greely’s girls placed first).
The Capers boys were paced by Liam Simpson, champion of the mile in 4:34.36. Deven Roberts was third in the 110 hurdles (16.59). Eddie Galvin came in third in the triple jump (39-9).
On the girls’ side, Hailey Petsinger was third in the 800 (2:32.37). Christina Kouros won the 800 (3:21.73) and 1,600 (7:07.58) wheelchair events.
States
The state championship meets are Saturday. Scarborough and South Portland travel to Brewer for the Class A meet. Cape Elizabeth vies for Class B honors in Bath.
“The state meet is going to be a battle between Cheverus, Edward Little and Scarborough,” Veilleux said. “All three teams are capable of winning. It’s going to be the team that shows up and is able to perform under pressure. Cheverus will be motivated after a few mishaps at the conference meet, Edward Little hasn’t won an outdoor state title since 2003, but they have a senior group that will be motivated. I feel good about our chances. This senior group has had a great run. The only thing missing is a state outdoor title. We’ve done the work necessary to have a chance to win, now we have to go out and execute.”
The New England championship meet is Saturday, June 8, in New Britain, Conn.
