Scarborough resident Rebecca Flaherty, dressed as a mermaid, rallies the crowd Saturday, Sept. 6, at Pine Point Beach in Scarborough to vote for their favorite sculpture during Sandsations – an annual sand-sculpting event to benefit Birth Roots, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing support and education to mothers during pregnancy and the first year of parenting. The sculpture in the background – Jabba the Hutt with a frozen Han Solo – was the eventual winner of the Golden Shovel Award, chosen by judges.

Some of the winners of the Golden Shovel Award, part of Tusken Raiders, an eight-person team comprised of three families. Clockwise from top left are 5-year-olds Cora Berry, Omari Brent and Kjeld Nelson, and 1-year-old Greta Deragon.
