PORTLAND — SailMaine, a nonprofit that teaches kids to sail, launched its first public fundraising appeal this week.

The 13-year-old organization is asking for donations to help it continue to offer affordable sailing training to kids. More than 325 young sailors participated in the program this year, along with 150 adults. SailMaine operates from a small piece of land it leases from the city on the eastern waterfront.

In the past, the organization has operated on fees and private donations from a small group of supporters. It gives fee waivers and scholarships to sailors under 18 who need financial aid.
