CUMBERLAND — School Administrative District 51 will hire an interim principal at Greely High School to allow more time to find a permanent replacement.

Dan McKeone ended nearly 20 years at the school June 30, with nearly the last decade as principal. He announced his departure two months ago, and the school district advertised the position through late May, with the hope of having a new principal start Aug. 1.

But that schedule didn’t provide enough time to find a suitable replacement, Superintendent Jeff Porter said in an interview June 28.

SAD 51 received 13 applications and initially interviewed six people, two of whom were brought back for second interviews. A search committee then reopened the search for about a week, Porter said.

“Now we’re at a point (where) we’re going to look for an interim principal for a year,” he said, adding that Assistant Principal Jayme Jones has not expressed interest in the job.

“It’s kind of late for us to search for a high school principal,” Porter said. “Scarborough, Brunswick and others have had a really hard time as well, and they’ve been going with interim principals as well.”

Porter said he hopes to nominate an interim in time for the July 9 meeting of the SAD 51 Board of Directors. The district would then restart the principal search in January 2019, and hope to have a selection by next April or May.
