FALMOUTH — A South Portland man was arrested early Wednesday, March 7, for burglarizing several vehicles in the area of Mountain Road in Falmouth.

Falmouth Police Lt. John Kilbride said Timothy Richards, 54, was “basically taking items of opportunity” that were left in unlocked cars. Richards has been charged with felony theft and a misdemeanor. In addition, he’s facing a charge of violating probation.

Kilbride would not identify the items taken, but said Richards has “an extensive criminal history” of similar charges and he was in possession “of numerous items that we believe (were) stolen.”

Kilbride said Richards broke into at least a couple vehicles in Falmouth and “we believe he’s also responsible for several others.”

“We will be working with (other) area law enforcement agencies to identify further victims,” the lieutenant said in a press release.

According to Kilbride, Falmouth Police were tipped to Richards’ presence by a resident who reported “suspicious activity around their parked vehicle in the driveway.”

Kilbride said, “Officers arrived quickly on scene and, after a brief investigation, located and arrested” Richards.

“We are asking any victims from motor vehicle break-ins (around the) Greater Portland area within the past several days to report these incidents to their local police departments,” he added.
