SOUTH PORTLAND — The high school robotics team was a quarter-finalist in the FIRST Robotics Championship held last weekend in St. Louis.

The Riot Crew performed in a field of 400, randomly divided into four groups of 100. South Portland’s robot, “Betty,” placed eighth in its group, but was eliminated in the quarterfinals.

South Portland’s FIRST Robotics team earned a spot at the championship by winning a regional contest March 1-3 in Manchester, N.H., where teams pitted their robots against each other in a complex, basketball-like game.
