HARPSWELL — Ryan L. Johnson, 28, of Bailey Island, died April 18 in Harpswell from accidental drowning.

Johnson was born Nov. 26, 1984, in Brunswick, to Kathleen A. Johnson and Michael L. Bibber. His family lived in Harpswell, and he attended Harpswell Islands School and graduated from Mt. Ararat High School in 2003. He recently had taken on a new challenge and began studying with the Maine Energy Marketers Association to become an oil heating technician, and to obtain training in propane, air conditioning and electrical work.

Johnson was very proud to be accomplishing his new career goals. When he passed his first two courses, he enthusiastically displayed his certificates. Another accomplishment was running track. In the past, he won gold and silver medals in 800-yard and 1,500-yard races at state meets.

Johnson was very athletic and enjoyed sports. He looked forward to boat races each summer, and also enjoyed fishing, hunting and hanging out with his friends and family. He especially enjoyed taking long walks with his dog Comet on the back shore.

Johnson was a typical island boy – “Bailey Island born and raised,” as he proudly wore on his chest. He was full of hell, fun and laughter, and was devoted to his friends and family.

He was predeceased by his grandparents, Bernard W. and Joan B. Johnson and Beverly R. Bibber.

He is survived by his parents, Kathleen A. Johnson and Michael L. Bibber of Harpswell; a grandfather, William H. Bibber of Harpswell; his brother, Will Johnson of Bailey Island; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

A celebration of Johnson’s life will be held Saturday at 11 a.m., at Bailey Island Union Church, Route 24, Bailey Island, with Cindy Baumgartner officiating. Interment will be in Bailey Island Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Johnson’s memory may be made to the Willing Helpers Inc., P.O. Box 233, Bailey Island, ME 04003.
