TOPSHAM — Ruth M. Rumery Douglass, 90, formerly of Scarborough, died June 11.

She was born in Biddeford on Oct. 5, 1918, daughter of Linwood R. and Helen E. (York) Rumery.

In 1937, she graduated from Biddeford High School.

During World War II, she worked in a textiles lab and later at Kresge’s when she met her future husband, Lloyd C. Douglass, before he enlisted in the U.S. Army.

On June 7, 1947, they were married in South Portland and began their life together in Blue Point, Scarborough, where they raised their five children. He worked as an electrician at Snow Food Products while she managed the house and the family.

While her children were young, she worked with Girl Scouts, Camp Fire Girls and Cub Scouts. She was active in the Scarborough Music Boosters for 20 years. Additionally, she was a charter member and longtime treasurer of the Pine Point Engine 4 Ladies Auxiliary, and a 54-year member of the Ladies Guild of the Blue Point Congregational Church.

In 2000, she was awarded the Maine Ageless Hero for Community Involvement by the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association. Also, she was recognized as an outstanding volunteer at the Pine Point Center for Health Care and Rehabilitation.

She was well known for her sewing, making band uniforms, wedding dresses and gowns for family, and also for her baking.

Her interests included traveling, and she enjoyed taking day trips around Maine and spending summers at Sebago Lake.

She was predeceased by her husband of 37 years, Lloyd, who died Oct. 5, 1984; two brothers, Linwood Rumery Jr., and Donald Rumery; and a granddaughter, Audrey Rose Call.

She is survived by her five children, Bruce and his wife Cynthia of North Stonington, Conn., Alan and his wife Susan Jones of Phippsburg, Lois and her husband Michael Ava Matthews of Westford Mass., Janice of Newark Del., and Nancy and her husband Andy Call of Dresden; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Rumery of Fortunes Rocks, Biddeford and Polly Douglass of Greenville, and two brothers-in-law, Leonard Douglass and Harold Snow of Scarborough.

Memorial services were held earlier this week.
