SOUTH PORTLAND — Ruth Elaine Kimball, 72, died in her sleep on Sept. 13.

Kimball was born in Portland on June 27, 1942, the daughter of Philip T. and Thelma J. O’Donnell. She enjoyed her childhood, growing up in the city’s Munjoy Hill neighborhood, attending her beloved Cathedral School and spending time “up country” with family and friends.

On May 7, 1960, she married her husband of 54 years, Peter J. Kimball Sr.

The couple raised three children, Christine, Gardi and Jeff. In addition, Kimball worked as a secretary in the post-anesthesia care unit of Maine Medical Center, where her career spanned 37 years.

Kimball was known for her wonderful Irish sense of humor, and her love of people, pets and life. She was always there for her family and friends, to share a hug or some affectionate words.

She is survived by her husband, Peter; daughters, Christine and Gardi; son, Jeff; grandsons, Zakry and Cassidy; great-grandson, Jordan; sisters, Patty and Maryjane; brother, Philip; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Visiting hours were held Sept. 17, and a Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Sept. 18 at the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception in Portland. Interment was scheduled at the Community of Resurrection in Otisfield.
