BOWDOIN — Russell Adams Pennell, 86, died Feb. 27 at Parkview Adventist Medical Center.
He was born in Topsham, May 30, 1922, a son of Charles and Bertha (French) Pennell.
After attending Brunswick High School, he worked at a conservation camp.
On Nov. 15, 1940, he married June Simpson.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy on patrol torpedo boats in the South Pacific.
He worked in a variety of different fields, including construction, for Barrow’s Mayflower, as a rail foreman with Central Maine Railroad, and as a deputy for the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Department. For several years after retirement, he served as the Town of Bowdoin tax collector and treasurer.
He enjoyed hunting, ocean fishing, playing his guitar and composing music.
He was predeceased by his wife June on April 5, 2002, son Russell Pennell Jr., sister Nancy Lee Card, brothers Robert, Donald and Myron Pennell, brother in-law Clifford Card, and niece Rebecca Card.
Surviving are daughters, Sharon Meserve and her husband Charles Jr. of Bowdoinham, and Ramona Meserve and her husband Foster Sr., of Bowdoin; son William Pennell and his wife Beverly of Bath; brother Bert Pennell of Topsham; 11 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and 7 great-great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were held last week.
