BRUNSWICK — More than 1,000 people are expected to attend the seventh annual Run for the Fallen Maine at Brunswick Landing on Sunday, Aug. 24.

The 5K run/walk is held in honor of the nearly 100 military men and women from Maine who have lost their lives in service to their country since 2001.

About 1,200 people ran last year, making it one of the largest such events in the country, organizer John Mixon said.

Registration  is $25, but family members of fallen soldiers can register for free. Registration includes a T-shirt and entry to a finish-line celebration including food, music and an awards ceremony.

Money raised goes to providing assistance to families of lost service members, including scholarships and general assistance, but Mixon said the real purpose is to raise awareness and honor the memory of soldiers who lost their lives.

Registration is still open at the Run for the Fallen’s website. Same day registration starts at 7 a.m. and the race starts at 10 a.m.
