BATH — Regional School Unit 1 is nearing completion of a fundraising initiative to teach all third- and fourth-graders to swim.

The program led by a committee of volunteers tapped by RSU 1 Superintendent William Shuttleworth has raised about 75 percent of the funds necessary to begin swim lessons for the students. The campaign began about three months ago.

RSU 1 plans to begin the lessons, which will be worked into the physical education program, as soon as it has the full $22,000.

To donate, send checks payable to RSU1: Swim for Health to the RSU 1 Superintendent’s Office, 39 Andrews Road, Bath, ME 04530. Contact Judy Metcalf at 442-7820 or metcalf442@myfairpoint.net for more information.
