BATH — Roy Lawrence Reed Jr., 78, of Bath, died at his home Dec. 10 with his family by his side.

He was born in St. Louis, May 14, 1934, the son of Roy Sr. and Albina Zuzack Reed.

Reed grew up in Columbia, Mo., graduating from Hickman High School in the class of 1952. He went on to further his education and graduated from the University of Missouri in Columbia with a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering.

After working for Schlumberger Well Surveying Corp. in Cushing, Okla., Reed joined the U.S. Air Force in 1956. In December of that year, he was transferred to Brunswick Naval Air Station and Maine became his home. In May 1958, he met Sally Footer on a blind date, and they were married Oct. 25 at St. Mary’s Church.

The family moved to New York in 1962 and Reed was offered a job working for DuPont as an electrical engineer. In 1965, the family moved back home to Maine and Reed was employed at Bath Iron Works, until retiring as vice president of marketing in 1990.

Reed was a loyal man who always put his family first. He looked forward to spending time with his grandchildren, and always made sure he was at their sporting events to root them on. In his spare time, he enjoyed being at his camp on Damariscotta Lake, which he built himself.
