Firefighters battle a stubbon fire that engulfed a Ford SUV driven by David Elliott of Yarmouth on Route 1 near the Muddy Rudder restaurant Monday, Oct. 26, at about 8 a.m. Elliott was the only one in the vehicle and he got out safely. Firefighters from Yarmouth, Freeport and Cumberland responded, and rush-hour traffic on Route 1 was rerouted. Firefighters said the cause of the fire appeared to be a broken fuel line that allowed a full tank of gasoline to gradually empty along the bottom of the vehicle.
