SUBHEAD-Portland High QB earns national honor

Portland senior Andrew Lieberman was named the Play It Smart National Student-Athlete of the Month for December. Lieberman, a senior quarterback for the Bulldogs, was nominated by Portland academic coach and athletic trainer Audrey McKenzie for his ability to persevere through multiple challenges while managing to maintain impressive grades, support his teammates and serve as a leader in the community.

SUBHEAD-SMCC hoops teams split against top rival
The Southern Maine Community College women’s basketball team defeated top rival Central Maine CC 64-60, while the men lost 87-66 last Wednesday in Auburn. The women were led by Sonya O’Tash, who had 29 points, 11 rebounds and five steals. Amanda Chandler added 15 points. The men fell to 14-5 despite 16 points and 12 rebounds from Coleman Findlay and 15 points from Josh Tuplin.

SUBHEAD-Girls and Women in Sports Day upcoming
Bowdoin College will host the annual Girls and Women in Sports Day Sunday, Feb. 8 at Farley Fieldhouse. The session for grades K through 3 is from 12 to 2 p.m. Grades 4 through high school go from 2:30 to 4:45 p.m. The free event is designed to introduce young women to a wide range of sports. Pizza and snacks with the Bowdoin student-athletes will be available afterwards.

Casco Bay Sports is now offering co-ed Tuesday and Thursday basketball leagues with referees. Monday Night Social Runs (6 p.m.) and Wednesday Night Rock Climbing (6:30 p.m.) are also being offered.
