Two SMCC basketball players named All-American
Southern Maine Community College recently had a men’s and a women’s basketball player named USCAA All-American. Coleman Findlay was selected from the men’s squad. Findlay averaged 20.4 points and 9.3 rebounds per game. Sonya O’Tash (16.4 points, 9.4 rebounds, 3.2 assists per game) was chosen from the women’s team. O’Tash is the second leading scorer (652) and rebounder (371) in program history.

Beach to Beacon online registration opens Sunday
Online registration for the 12th annual TD Banknorth Beach to Beacon 10K race will open at noon on March 15. Race organizers have expanded the field size to 6,000 participants this year – in increase of 500 runners – but expect spots to fill up even faster than last year’s record of 26 hours. Online registration is the only way to sign up for the race, which is scheduled for Aug. 1. The 2009 entry fee is $35. Registration for the Kids Fun Run will also open March 15, though this year it will be run the day before the 10K, on July 31.

Bruins alumni to face local hockey players
Former Boston Bruins will face local high school players Friday, April 3 at 7 p.m., at the Cumberland County Civic Center. The Portland Firefighters Union is encouraging local residents to show support by making a contribution.

Greater Portland men’s Over-50 softball league open for registrations
The Greater Portland Men’s Over-50 softball league located in Portland and South Portland and now in its 11th season, is seeking players for the 2009 season. Players who turn 50 prior to Dec. 31 are eligible.

Casco Bay Sports offering co-ed spring leagues
Casco Bay Sports is offering several co-ed spring leagues. Sunday Basketball begins play March 15 with games at 5:15 p.m. Thursday Dodgeball starts March 26. In April, a 6-on-6 soccer league, a Sunday flag football and a Sunday softball league will commence.

Cape Elizabeth baseball boosters hosting fundraiser
The Cape Elizabeth baseball boosters are holding a dance for ages 21 and up Saturday, March 21 from 7 p.m., to 12 a.m. at Camp Ketcha in Scarborough. There will be a cash bar, snacks and door prizes. Cape Elizabeth varsity football coach Aaron Filieo will DJ. Tickets are $12.50 in advance and $15 at the door.

Cape Elizabeth hockey fundraiser upcoming
The second annual Cape Elizabeth Engine Company No. 2 fundraiser hockey game between members of the Cape Elizabeth Fire Department and the Capers boys’ hockey team will be held March 21 at 8:15 p.m. at Portland Ice Arena. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students. A 50/50 raffle will also be held.

Haeuser named to all-conference team
South Portland’s Emily Haeuser, a junior at Vassar College, was named to the All-Liberty League second team recognizing her play as a forward on the women’s basketball team. A captain, Haeuser led the league in blocks and defensive rebounds.
