SUBHEAD-Waynflete Nordic teams finish seventh at WMC meet
The Waynflete boys’ and girls’ Nordic ski teams took part in the Western Maine Conference championship races last week. The skate race took place last Wednesday at Pineland. The Flyers boys had 126 points to finish seventh. Yarmouth was first with 27. Junior Nate Niles stole the show by finishing first on the 5-kilometer course in a time of 14 minutes, 40 seconds. The girls were eighth with 132 points. Yarmouth was tops with 34. Senior Ellie Cole was the top individual, placing 23rd in 21:04. Saturday, in the classic race, at Starks Hill in Fryeburg, the boys had 113 points and were seventh. Yarmouth was again first with 21 points. Niles was the champion in a time of 14:45. The girls placed seventh with 122 points. Yarmouth won with 28. Cole placed 22nd (22:05). Overall, Waynflete’s boys had 239 points to place seventh. Yarmouth was first with 48. The Flyers were also seventh in the girls’ competition with 254 points. Yarmouth won with 62. Waynflete next takes part in the Class C state meet Feb. 19 and 21 at Black Mountain.

SUBHEAD-Portland downs Cheverus in hockey showdown
City boys’ hockey rivals Cheverus and Portland did battle Saturday afternoon at Portland Ice Arena. The Bulldogs improved to 8-6-1 with a 5-0 win as senior standout Sam Guimond had two goals and an assist and Nick Sterling stopped all 19 shots he faced. Portland was coming off a 5-1 home win over Lake Region/Fryeburg. The Bulldogs (?t in the Western Class A Heal Points standings) host Falmouth Thursday, welcome Scarborough Saturday and close the regular season at Westbrook Tuesday. The Stags fell to 3-11-1 with the loss. They had edged visiting Bonny Eagle 3-2 two days prior. Cheverus is ?t in the latest Heals. The Stags host Kennebunk Thursday, Biddeford Saturday and go to Thornton Academy Monday in the regular season finale. Deering is 1-14 after recent losses to Marshwood (), Sanford () and Lake Region (). The Rams (?t in the Heals) host Marshwood Thursday, South Portland Saturday and Gorham Monday to end the regular year.

SUBHEAD-SMCC splits with EMCC, swept by St. Joe’s
The Southern Maine Community College women’s basketball team had little trouble with visiting Eastern Maine CC Saturday in a 67-34 triumph. The Seawolves led 37-14 at the break and cruised to victory behind 17 points from Darcey Webster and 15 from Rachel Del Camp. The men weren’t as fortunate, falling 105-103 in an overtime thriller. Coleman Findlay scored 37 in a losing effort. Sunday, the women, now 16-8, lost 62-58 to visiting St. Joseph’s College of New York despite 15 points each from Del Camp and Sonya O’Tash and 14 from Amanda Chandler. The men dropped an 84-78 decision to St. Joe’s. Coleman Findlay had 22 points and Matt Findlay added 20. Both SMCC teams host Unity Thursday in the regular season finale.

SUBHEAD-Portland boy and girl advance to Hoop Shoot regionals
Portland’s Taylor Sargent and Michael Wiper finished first at the recent Maine Elks Association State Hoop Shoot contest in Augusta and advanced to the regional championships to be held March 27 through March 29 in South Portland. Sargent won the girls’ 10-11 age group. Wiper was first in the boys 11-12 competition.

SUBHEAD-PBC fighters win at regional tournament
Three Portland Boxing Club fighters won bouts at last weekend’s Regional Golden Gloves tournament in Burlington, Vt., and advanced to the New England Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions to be held Feb. 17 and Feb. 18 in Lowell, Mass. Middleweight Russell Lamour Jr. won an unanimous decision over Jason Carrier of Claremont, N.H. Welterweight Jimmy Smith beat Tony Allard of West Burke, Vt., in the first round. Super lightweight Casey Kramlich won an unanimous decision over Jason McMillan of Burlington, Vt. Heavyweight Lee Lamour, female welterweight Lisa Kuronya and lightweight Liz Leddy also advanced by walkover. Light heavyweight Keith Derrig fell 4-1 to Josh McAulliffe of Bangor.

SUBHEAD-Deering softball comedy benefit Saturday
The Deering High School softball boosters are hosting a night of comedy Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at The Gold Room. Proceeds will help fund the purchase of equipment and uniforms. Tickets are $10.

SUBHEAD-USM baseball team hosting clinics
Coach Ed Flaherty and the University of Southern Maine Huskies baseball team will host a pitching, hitting and defense clinic Sundays Feb. 22 and March 1 at the Costello Fieldhouse on the USM Gorham campus. The pitching and defense clinics go from 9 a.m. to 12 p.. Hitting clinics are from 1 to 4 p.m. The cost of each session is $30. The full day is $50. Players ages 8 to 18 are welcome.

SUBHEAD-Lacrosse officials wanted
The Maine Lacrosse Officials Association is holding its annual men’s high school referee training program Feb. 22 and March 1 (with March 8 as a snow day) at North Yarmouth Academy. Officials are needed for boys’ lacrosse for the upcoming season.
