Local runners compete at national championships
Falmouth’s Kellen McDonald and Freeport’s Adrian Baker represented Maine on 4×400 relay teams at the USA Track and Field national championships Feb. 28 in Boston. Baker and her teammates were fourth in 4 minutes, 3.41 seconds. McDonald and his teammates came in third.
Freeport Middle School skiers cap strong seasons
The Freeport Middle School Alpine and Nordic ski teams had another solid season this winter under the direction of Alpine coach Scott Cushing and Nordic coach Bob Moore. At the Class B championships at Shawnee Peak, the Alpine girls’ team was second (out of 11 schools) in the slalom and third in the giant slalom. Elly Bengtssen won both races. The boys were fifth in the slalom and seventh in the GS. The Nordic team was sixth out of 13 schools. Griffin Breer was fifth in the boys’ skimeister competition. Ryder Bennell came in sixth. Lily LaMarre was eighth on the girls’ side.
Beach to Beacon on-line registration opens March 15
On-line registration for the 12th annual TD Banknorth Beach to Beacon 10K race will open at noon Sunday. Race organizers have expanded the field size to 6,000 participants this year- in increase of 500 runners – but expect spots to fill up even faster than last year’s record of 26 hours. On-line registration is the only way to sign up for the race, which is scheduled for Aug. 1. The 2009 entry fee is $35. Registration for the Kids Fun Run will also open March 15, though this year it will be run the day before the 10K, on July 31.

Casco Bay Sports offering co-ed spring leagues
Casco Bay Sports is offering several co-ed spring leagues. Sunday Basketball begins play March 15 with games at 5:15 p.m. Thursday Dodgeball starts March 26. In April, a 6-on-6 soccer league, a Sunday flag football and a Sunday softball league will commence.

Bruins alumni to face local hockey players
Former Boston Bruins will face local high school players Friday, April 3 at 7 p.m., at the Cumberland County Civic Center. The Portland Firefighters Union is encouraging local residents to show support by making a contribution.

Greater Portland men’s Over-50 softball league open for registrations
The Greater Portland Men’s Over-50 softball league located in Portland and South Portland and now in its 11th season, is seeking players for the 2009 season. Players who turn 50 prior to Dec. 31 are eligible.

Falmouth sports fundraiser dance upcoming
The third annual Falmouth Sports Fundraiser Dance, featuring the music of ColorBlind, will be held April 3 from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m. at the Italian Heritage Center in Portland. Tickets are $15 per person and should be purchased in advance.

Casco Bay Stripers conclude regular season
The Casco Bay YMCA Stripers swim team recently concluded its regular season. Evan Coleman set new marks in the boys’ 13-14 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Amelia Deady lowered the new team record in the girls’ 13-14 100, 200 and 1,650 freestyle, and beat her own team mark in the 200 fly. Allison Curtis has a new record in the 500 free. Eliza Lunt set a new record in the girls’ 9-10 backstroke. Adam Rolland is the new team record-holder in the boys’ 9-10 backstroke. Connor LaJoie and Travis Libsack (1,650 freestyle), Abby Belisle-Haley (girls’ 12-and-under 50 fly) and Zach Rolland (boys’ 11-12 200 free) also beat their old team marks.
