SCARBOROUGH — Rosemary Hawley Snelling, 94, of Scarborough, died March 15, 2016, at home with her family by her side.

She was born Feb. 24, 1922, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Rose Gunn Hawley and Horace Hill Hawley. She graduated from Ridley Park High School in 1941. After high school Snelling moved to New York City, where she worked at the YMCA. It was there she met the love of her life, Roger Parker Snelling of Haverhill, Massachusetts, on a blind date. They were married July 14, 1945.

Snelling went back to work in 1957 for the school lunch program at Scarborough High School. She worked at Jordan Marsh, later Macy’s, from 1969 until she retired in 1987. In her free time she enjoyed knitting, crocheting and cooking. She also enjoyed making beautiful hand smocked dresses for her friend’s children and her family. She was also very active and supportive of her husband’s Masonic duties.

The couple spent many vacations in Europe, as well as the Caribbean islands and Hawaii. They also enjoyed camping since 1951 at Sebago Lake State Park and then at Thompson Lake in Otisfield.

Snelling was predeceased by her husband, her parents, two sisters, Mary Shockley, of New Jersey and Josephine Herrmann, of Pennsylvania; and a brother, Horace Hawley, of Florida.

She is survived by her daughter, Susan Snelling, of Scarborough; two grandsons, Andy Curry, of Rochester, New Hampshire, and Chris Curry, of Waterboro; three great-grandchildren, Parker Thomas Curry, of Gorham, Gavin Lawrence Curry and Isabelle Marie Curry, both of Waterboro; a brother, Donald Hawley, of Pennsylvania; a sister, Ruth McCormick, of Ohio; and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the hospice caregivers who made Snelling comfortable during her final months.

At Snelling’s request there will be no services. She will be buried next to her husband at Black Point Cemetery at a future date.

If desired, donations may be made to the Maine and Florida nonprofit organization thepixelfund.org or the charity of one’s choice.
