SOUTH PORTLAND — Robert L. Stoehr, 78, died Feb. 13 after a lengthy illness.
On Oct. 13, 1931, he was born in Oxford, the son of George and Sarah Lawrence Stoehr.
After he graduated from Portland High School he served four years on the naval aircraft carrier USS Bennington during the Korean War.
Later on he and his father built and operated a barbershop in South Portland.
For 20 years he taught the art of barbering and cosmetology at the Maine Youth Center. More recently he was the owner of the Gentleman’s Choice Barbershop on Meeting House Hill where his customers appreciated his dry sense of humor.
He was an active member of the Hiram Lodge of Masons, Blue Lodge and Scottish Rite, the Shriners, the American Legion and was a “Dad Advisor” for the Frank S. Land Chapter of the DeMolay youth organization.
An avid hockey fan, he was also a passionate dog lover and longtime supporter of the Animal Refuge League in Westbrook.
He was predeceased by his sisters Ruth Smith, Ella Watson, and Lucille Roberts.
Surviving are his wife Loretta of South Portland; three children, Bonnie Reid and husband Robert of Gorham, Kevin of Portland and Trina of Portland; granddaughter Lindsay Reid Dube and husband Chris of Buxton; four sisters, Dorothy Brooks of Tiverton, R.I., Annette Daggett of West Dennis, Cape Cod, Hazel Sanborn of Portland, and Elsa Knight of Center Conway, N.H..
Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 21 at Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road in South Portland with a memorial service to follow.
Memorial donations can be made to The Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland, P.O. Box 336, Westbrook, ME 04098.
