SCARBOROUGH — Robert L. Dougherty, 78, of Scarborough, died suddenly July 24 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Born May 4, 1937, in Portland, he was the son of Elmer and Elizabeth Smith Dougherty.

Robert graduated from Deering High School in 1956, and soon married Delores Monteiro, with whom he had two daughters. In 1966, he married Evangeline Sawyer Dougherty and had a son.

Robert worked at Mercy Hospital, First National Bank and an A&P grocery warehouse before being employed at Unifirst Corp., where he spent the next 37 years as plant manager. He retired in 1999.

Dougherty was a 10-year member of the Scarborough Fire Department’s Engine No. 1, served as a Webelos leader for 10 years, and was an assistant Scout master for 15 years. Until his death, he also served as president of Camp Scarborough. In addition, he taught Sunday school at First Congregational Church, coached Little League for 10 years, and was active in the Portland Kiwanis Club.

Dougherty loved to bowl, and was active in many local bowling leagues. He also loved camping, especially at Wassamki Springs Campground in Scarborough, where he enjoyed the ring toss and playing cards. He and his wife enjoyed travel to destinations such as Las Vegas, Bahamas, Hawaii, the Dominican Republic, Bermuda, Mexico, Arizona and Florida. He enjoyed time with family more than anything, and looked forward to preparing breakfast for them or taking his grandchildren out to a weekly dinner.

Dougherty was predeceased by his parents, his son, David C. Dougherty Sr., and his sisters, Virginia Crockett and Helen Foss.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Evangeline Sawyer Dougherty, of Scarborough; two brothers, Carl S. Dougherty Sr. and his wife, Arlene, of Otisfield, and W. William Dougherty and his wife, Lynn, of Texas; daughter, Beth Ann Monteiro, of Florida, and her children, Kyle Kugler and his wife, Jasmine, of New York, Austen Kugler, of Florida, Alec Kugler, of New York, and Emily Kugler, of Florida; daughter, Susan Dougherty and her husband, Kevin Brady, of Buxton; son, Gary K. Willette, of Stonington, and his children, Robert G. Willette and his wife, Kristy, of Scarborough, Gail Willette Johnson and her husband, Dan, of Connecticut, Cary Willette, of Saco, and Kenneth D. Willette and his wife, Hannah, of Stonington; son, Robert R. Willette, of Trenton, his children, Angela Willette and Nick Green, of Bath, Ashley Willette, of New Hampshire, and Madison Eaton and her mother, Patricia Eaton, of Stonington; son, Ronald J. Willette, of Scarborough, his children, Jennifer and Jacob Willette, and their mother, Deborah Willette, of Saco; the children of his deceased son, David C. Dougherty Jr. and Jennifer Odum, of Massachusetts; and five great-grandchildren, Sarya Willette, Vaeha Willette, Curtis Fogg, Walker Fogg and Brycen Green.

Visitation and a memorial service were held Aug. 1 at Hobbs Funeral Home, in Scarborough. Interment followed at Black Point Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Scarborough Fire Department.
