PHIPPSBURG — Robert J. Bernier, 80, died May 17 at Mid Coast Hospital.

He was born in Brunswick on Sept. 4, 1928, a son of Edward Sr., and Alfreda (Martin) Bernier.

He served in the Drum and Bugle Corps for the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II .

On Sept. 7, 1949, he married Theresa M. LaPointe.

After his military service, he worked as a firefighter and later for the Brunswick school department. He retired as supervisor of custodians at Brunswick Junior High School.

He enjoyed teaching color guard units at Brunswick area schools and won many competitions.

His interests included camping, crafts, and music. He had a turntable and an eight-track system that he used to play his extensive collection of records and eight-track tapes on.

He was predeceased by his wife Theresa, who died in 1999, three sons, infants Joseph and John Bernier and Mark A. Bernier Sr., and six brothers, Andrew, Everest, Remy, Henry, and Edward Jr.

He is survived by a daughter-in-law, Patricia Bernier of Phippsburg; two grandsons, Mark Bernier of Portland and Jason Bernier of Phippsburg; two brothers, Tony Bernier of Brunswick and Armand Bernier of Harpswell and three sisters, Priscilla Belanger of Brunswick, Rehea Pelkey of Brunswick, and Constance Elia of Brick, N.J.; and four great-grandchildren, Trevor and Jocelyn Bernier of Phippsburg and Kayla and Connor Bernier of Virginia Beach, Va.

Memorial services were held earlier this week. A committal service with military honors will be held at 9 a.m., May 26 at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery Chapel in Augusta.

Arrangements are by David E. Desmond & Son Funeral Home, 638 High St., Bath.
